James Kicklighter is a Los Angeles–based documentary and narrative filmmaker, Television Academy member, and Producers Guild of America–designated producer (p.g.a.), known for The Sound of Identity (Prime Video) and The American Question (Apple TV). His work explores identity, culture, and transformation through character-driven storytelling that bridges documentary and narrative formats.
Born and raised in Bellville, Georgia, James began making films in the rural South before moving west to build his career in Los Angeles. His Southern roots remain a throughline in his creative voice — a sensibility for outsider perspectives, character interiority, and the moral weight of small communities. He is represented by United Talent Agency and Rain Management Group.
James's feature documentary The Sound of Identity follows transgender opera singer Lucia Lucas as she becomes the first openly transgender woman to perform a principal role in a professional opera, currently streaming on Prime Video. The American Question, his feature documentary on American political polarization, premiered as the #1 film on Apple TV. His narrative short film Angel of Anywhere stars Briana Evigan & Ser'Darius Blain, and explores connection and empathy in the small encounters of everyday life.
James's filmography also includes Desires of the Heart, Digital Edition, Every 9 Hours, and The Car Wash. His work has streamed across major platforms including Apple TV, Prime Video, STARZ, and others, and his films have been recognized at festivals including the Oscar-qualifying Sidewalk Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, and numerous others.
Beyond directing, James is an active producer, screenwriter, and editor. He continues to develop narrative and documentary projects across multiple genres including political documentary, identity-driven nonfiction, Southern Gothic narrative, and LGBTQ+ storytelling.
James serves on the Communication Arts Advisory Board at Georgia Southern University, where he graduated in 2006, and is a frequent educator and speaker on filmmaking craft. He has taught courses through Stage 32, including the Shot List Mastery Lab and a four-session Documentary Filmmaking Masterclass.
His thematic focus spans documentary filmmaking, narrative filmmaking, LGBTQ+ storytelling, Southern storytelling, opera documentary, character-driven nonfiction, political documentary, identity documentary, trans representation in film, documentary pitch development, and cinematic storytelling. His work has been recognized for its formal craft, its commitment to character interiority, and its bridging of documentary realism and narrative emotional architecture.
James splits his time between Los Angeles and his hometown of Bellville, Georgia. He plays pickleball, reads widely in nonfiction, and is active in the Queer Pickleball Club in Los Angeles. He continues to develop and direct work across both documentary and narrative formats from his base in West Hollywood.
