Independent Shorts Awards is a Los Angeles-based international short film festival, hosting monthly editions that serve as qualifiers for its Annual Awards. Each year, the Annual Awards event showcases 70/80 outstanding short films selected from the monthly competition, including official nominees in contention for the annual awards, as well as a curated non-competitive section.
At the 7th Annual Independent Shorts Awards in 2025, the showcase presented 70 films from 19 countries — including 48 premieres — and gathered a distinguished community of filmmakers, actors, and industry figures at Regal LA Live.
Among those honored were industry-recognized professionals Tate Donovan, Michael Paré, Madison Wolfe, and David Alan Graf, whose presence underscored the festival’s growing reputation as a platform where established talent meets emerging voices.
Alongside the screenings and red-carpet moments, a special Spotlight Q&A panel brought together this year’s guests to reflect on the craft of storytelling and the evolving role of independent short films in the global industry.

Monthly Competitions
Each monthly season, submitted projects are judged by a rotating panel of invited experts from academia and the film industry, based on high standards of artistic and technical merit. Monthly award winners are considered for Annual Award nominations. All Annual Award nominees are screened at the annual event and compete for the Annual Awards.
Annual International Stage
Our annual stage, showcasing some of the best independent short films curated from around the world, with most being represented by their cast and crew, brings together in Los Angeles a vibrant community of filmmakers and provides a unique opportunity for global interaction and networking.
SUBMISSIONS & PROMOTION
Each submission may enter additional judging categories via multiple submissions. The name(s) to be credited must be included in the cover letter or sent by email.
All entries are promoted through our website and social media channels, with a featured page that may include a synopsis, film stills, and a trailer.
For this purpose, we recommend that projects be fully completed on FilmFreeway, including film stills, production photos, a downloadable poster, and a trailer or teaser.
MONTHLY AWARDS
All projects officially selected in each monthly round receive the Independent Shorts Awards official laurel and a custom digital certificate corresponding to their final status in the competition.
Each entry is evaluated by at least three judges, who assess quality and creativity using a performance-based scoring system. The highest-rated entries are nominated within their respective categories, from which award winners are determined.
Awards are presented monthly across all categories at five levels of distinction, based on overall evaluation and score thresholds:
Platinum Awards
Gold Awards
Silver Awards
Bronze Awards
Honorable Mentions
Each monthly round may also recognize overall distinctions, including Best Short, awarded to the strongest project of the round, and Awards of Excellence, granted as additional jury distinctions.
Categories or award levels may remain unassigned if no submission meets the festival’s eligibility requirements or minimum score thresholds. Award levels are determined by overall evaluation and may vary depending on the quality of submissions received.
Some award-winning films may be selected for public screenings, with their teams invited to attend and participate in special Q&A sessions.
ANNUAL AWARDS
Top monthly award winners qualify for consideration at the Annual Awards, which are based on an annual cycle of 12 monthly rounds. From this pool, the Judges’ Committee selects a curated group of films to be nominated for the Annual Awards, representing the strongest projects of the year.
All Annual Award nominees are screened at the Annual Awards event, typically held in September, following the traditional format of an annual film festival.
