2024 SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN!

Down Under Film Festival has been a vital hub for enthusiasts of Australian and New Zealand cinema and culture since 2011. As Europe's leading festival for Australian and New Zealand film, it brings fresh filmmaking from Australia and New Zealand to Berlin, offering a platform for these incredible films and new audiences to meet in the heart of Europe.

Only a few films from Down Under actually get a European release and most of their unique elements such as poetic, stunning visuals, distinct quirkiness, dark humour, and authentic storytelling are too often lost to European audiences.

Here, Down Under FF steps in. Ranging from independent productions to blockbusters, from student and professional short films to inspiring documentaries – diversity is one of the cornerstones of the program. Audiences of Down Under FF can enjoy all types of films such as drama, comedy, thriller, horror, animation, Indigenous, and experimental.

The festival regularly cooperates with renowned film institutions and film schools such as the New Zealand Film Commission, Screen Australia, the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne (VCA) and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS).

2024 FILM REQUIREMENTS

1. Down Under Film Festival accepts films of all genres and running times. There is no restriction regarding the production year but films not older than 2 years are preferred. Participation in other festivals does not preclude participation in Down Under Berlin.

2. Films must fulfill at least one of the following four prerequisites:

a) The subject matter of the film strongly depicts Australian or New Zealand people, places, landscapes, cultures, or any other Australian or New Zealand themes.
b) The film was completely or partially produced and/or funded by an Australian or New Zealand entity or legal person.
c) Australia or New Zealand was the main filming location.
d) At least one of the directors and/or writers of the film is from Australia or New Zealand or has their main places of residence in Australia or New Zealand.

3. Films must be submitted via FilmFreeway only.

4. Films must be password protected if available online (e.g. on YouTube or Vimeo).

5. Should the submitted film be available on SVoD/VoD by 15 August 2024, the submitter must inform the festival about this immediately and state the respective release date and content provider. This rule also applies to a European cinema and/or television release.

6. All films must have an embedded soundtrack.

7. Subtitles: Australian and New Zealand English and slang is not always easy for foreign audiences to follow. We therefore ask filmmakers to provide English or German subtitles with their films, if possible, once selected. All non-English language films MUST have embedded English subtitles.

8. You must have express permission from the film’s rights holder to submit. The same rule applies to all films if more than one film is submitted.

9. You must have the appropriate copyright clearances for all music used in the film (if required). The same rule applies to all films if more than one film is submitted.

Thank you Down Under Berlin Film Festival for selecting For Thom as part of the AUS and NZ Shorts Showcase! Such an honour to open the program playing other great Australian and New Zealand films. I didn't get to attend but I heard great things from friends I knew who did. Can't wait to hopefully attend in the future!

Mala, Angus, and the entire team,

Wow, thank you for providing us filmmakers with a platform to share our work and celebrate what it means to be a community, bringing us all together with open arms during times of uncertainty. The Down Under Film Festival is all about good times and big smiles. I'm delighted to have been a part of this year's film festival, and I hope to remain connected for the future. Now, I'm inspired to create a new film for next year's festival.

    Thanks again,
    Nathan :)

It was such a delight that Down Under Berlin Film Festival screened The Physical TV Company's short drama, CUT, written and directed by Samuel Lucas Allen. We wish we could have been there, but we heard great things from our local representative. Many thanks to Angus McGruther and Mala Ghedia. Hope we can attend next time!
