MicroHorrors is an underground, community film festival started in a parking lot in San Luis Obispo, CA. We operate under the firm belief that regional, independent films can find a substantial audience right there in the gutters from which they were made.
In September of 2021, we (Katie and Jason, co-founders) thought we could get our friends to make short horror films and screen them as an event around Halloween (social cravings fueled by covid). It started as word-of-mouth communication and then an Instagram account with the tagline, "I'm making a short film in October and you should too." Over the course of October 2021, filmmakers in the community made 18 films and 18 films were screened in the parking lot of our friend's local small business. 100+ attendees showed up in 2021 and each year since, MicroHorrors welcomes more and more filmmakers, films, and friends to the Central Coast filmmaking community.
Nowadays, we still host MicroHorrors in that very same parking lot but with a much bigger screen. We also have encore screenings at the local independent cinema for those that prefer a warmer and more orderly experience.
We are committed to growing MicroHorrors as a community event and endeavor for as long as filmmakers make horror films on the Central Coast and audiences attend. Without either, MicroHorrors will go back to the gutters from whence it came.
Yours Truly,
MH
No prizes here. Just the opportunity to screen your film in front of 100+ peers and community members.
In the past, MicroHorrors has had "Audience Awards" from polling in various categories(directing, cinematography, screenplay, score, etc). We aren't sure how we feel about it. It's fun, but a lot of work. Maybe we will do it. Maybe we won't. Don't get your hopes up.
