DIFF was founded by filmmakers/artists Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam with the aim to promote contemporary cinema, art and independent media practices in the Indian Himalayan region. As long-term residents of Dharamshala, they wanted to provide a non-partisan public space where Dharamshala’s diverse population could come together and interact with each other, drawn by the common language of cinema. They launched the first edition of DIFF in November 2012, with each edition showcasing contemporary features and documentaries, a selection of shorts, animation and experimental films, curated from the best of Indian and international independent cinema.

Over the years, the festival has become one of India’s most prominent independent film festivals and is known for its adventurous and eclectic programming, and as a crossroads for multicultural exchange, creative reflection and discussion. The festival also runs a carefully designed community outreach programme that aims to bring a diverse audience to attend the main festival, and organises community screenings and innovative opportunities to foster discussion and critical thinking among the local community, particularly among the younger population.

The 15th edition of DIFF will take place in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala from 29 October to 1 November 2026, and an online programme with selected films will be accessible to viewers for a longer period of time.

DIFF does not have awards. It operates in the belief that the celebration of good cinema does not require competition or the intrusion of market forces.

DIFF 2026 will take place in McLeod Ganj from 29 October to 1 November, with an online edition expected to run from 2 to 9 November.

  • We are delighted that our student film “Rafu” from Annapurna College of Film and Media was officially selected for the Dharamshala International Film Festival 2025.

Director - Arnav had a wonderful experience being part of this prestigious festival that celebrates independent cinema and emerging voices. The communication from the festival team was smooth and professional, and the overall curation reflected exceptional taste and a strong commitment to nurturing young talent.

The atmosphere of the festival — set in the serene hills of Dharamshala — added a special charm to the entire experience.

We truly appreciate the effort, warmth, and dedication of the DIFF team in creating such a well-organized and inspiring festival. Looking forward to submitting our future projects as well!
