DIAMETRALE is the first International Film Festival in Austria, which sets the focus exclusively on experimental films. The selected movies break with conventional rules of film making and aesthetic norms. Especially, we are interested in HUMOURISTIC, ABSURD or GROTESQUE experimental movies. No premiere status is required.

In addition to the competition, there are several non-competitive short film sections: Sex Positive, AI & Gaming, Extended Reality (XR, VR, XR, AR), and "B-Sides".

sponsored by Cultural Department of Stadt Innsbruck and a special award sponsored by Nonseum Museum

› If our budget will allow it, selected film makers will get invited to the festival. We'll support film makers with traveling costs and accommodation.

› Films will probably be screened on partner film festivals.

Rules & Terms

1. The DIAMETRALE Film Festival is organised by Verein DIAMETRALE and Verein Contrapunkt, in collaboration with the new media art collective Me AndOther Me.

2. Each entry should contain EXPERIMENTAL, SURREAL or WEIRD elements in the broadest sense. Submissions, which also show HUMOURISTIC, ABSURD or GROTESQUE potential, will have the best chances. Since 2020 we're also looking for SEX POSITIVE SHORT FILMS: experimental, fun, erotic, ... – it's all about the diversity of sexuality, body and gender. The sex positve section has no award.

4. Submitted movies shouldn't be older than 2024. Please don't submit movies, which hasn't been selected for previous editions of DIAMETRALE.

5. The submitted films will be watched by film professionals, curators and programmers. In order to ensure the quality of the selection process we charge a submission fee.

6. Submission fees will not be refunded.

7. It's the submitter's responsibility to ensure that the preview copy is in full working order and that passwords and links on the submission platform are functional, otherwise the film won't be properly considered.

8. We just accept online screener.

9. With the submission the right holders give permission to use short excerpts or screenshots from the submitted films for promotional purposes, if their films got selected. Excerpts won’t be longer than 90 seconds or 10% of the total length of the film.

10. Films may be also included in out of competition programmes, subject to the submitter’s permission.

11. We offer screening fees for short and feature films.

12. After the festival, and in agreement with the rights holders, DIAMETRALE presents the short film selections that were shown in festival programmes, at the streaming platform KINO VOD CLUB. Streaming duration: 4 weeks.

13. The screening copy must arrive at office@diametrale.at no later than Feb 26, 2027. We need two versions:
– DCP or ProRes/H.264/H.265 HQ (the video should have at least 20 MBit/s)
– MP4 WEB (8-16 MBit/s)

14. Selected films will be published on the festival website www.diametrale.at (March, 2027).

15. Screening copies with language/commentary other than English must have English subtitles.

16. By submitting a film to the DIAMETRALE Film Festival the sender consents to the film being screened at the festival. It is no longer possible to retract the film from festival inclusion once the application form has been sent. It is the responsibility of the sender to ensure that permission has been obtained from all appropriate parties before submitting a film.

17. With the submission the film makers give permission to save information about the film for internal purposes. We take the protection of your personal data seriously and will not pass it on to third parties.

18. The jury for the International Competition is appointed by DIAMETRALE Film Festival and is comprised of representatives from various fields of film industry.

19. By submitting the entry form, the submitter acknowledges that they have read, understood and accepted the regulations without reservation.

    Diametrale is a wonderful little festival with a very friendly and incredibly dedicated team. We saw many inspiring films there, networked with other filmmakers and joined the amazing party. The international short film program is also carefully curated and the Austrian short film section offers a glimpse into the country’s experimental and arty film scene beyond the mainstream.
