DCIFF, the oldest independent film festival in Washington DC running since 1999, has been a FILM FORUM since 2022 ( we don't really mind everyone around us who copied us, but DCIFF has led the way and we have carefully thought through what a Forum means) with a storied history of presenting extraordinary films. We showcase cutting edge features, animation, experimental, shorts, and documentaries on every subject, from every country, and with every budget imaginable. There is a dedicated Animation Day. There is a dedicated late night/horror program.
All films are selected through review and come via submissions. We do not pre-select and we do not pay screening fees. We curate from selected submissions and have moved to fewer films and much, much more attention to each film and filmmaker. The 2026 festival will screen around 50 films (including shorts) over 5 days with robust filmmaker-centered programming around each selected film that allows for discussion, and engagement with audiences and sometimes several screenings. We work closely with selected filmmakers to craft thoughtful, seminar-type programming around their film’s presentation. We also bring the issues of independent filmmakers to the attention of lawmakers in Washington DC.
DCIFF brings together passionate artists, filmmakers, critics, curators, and film enthusiasts for a celebration of independent filmmaking. Like previous festivals, we continue to be an essentially volunteer-run festival. All submissions fees support festival programming. We invite and expect ALL selected filmmakers to take part and we help you join us. Our aim is to forward films and careers and we are thrilled with the success of our alumni.
The 2026 festival is entirely in-person in Washington, DC. Acceptance into DCIFF 2026 assumes your attendance and active involvement in the festival experience.
FYI: Student films are only a submission category: there is no programming section dedicated to student films except high school films.
PLEASE NOTE: HIGH SCHOOL FILM COMPETITION: will be May 13-15, 2026. AS OF 2025, this is a different submission process. The 13th annual high school film festival is now called Y-CAM and has its own FilmFreeway listing. Questions? Email dciffhighschool@gmail.com
We will have awards for the 2026 festival but are reevaluating our awards structure. Some Awards have up to $1,000 Awards attached, but we will update.
Y-CAM, the high school film competition, has awards of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places ($600, $525 and $450 accordingly). Y-CAM now has a SEPARATE FilmFreeway application portal.
