Actor, Director, Writer Arunjit Borah is fast making his presence felt in Bollywood and Assamese cinema. Hailing from the small town of Dibrugarh, situated on the banks of Brahmaputra, Bora’s love for theatre and cinema goes back to his childhood. Growing up in an artistically inclined family, Bora was actively involved in drama right from his school days acting and participating in a number of plays. In Class VI itself, Borah had written and directed a one act play on his own –an admirable feat for a boy of his age. A Founding member of Dibrugarh Aakhara Ghar a drama workshop, for Bora dramatics remains an undying passion. Bora traces his love for cinema to the 1980s smash hit Betaab with Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh in the lead. The movie had a hypnotic effect on him. Interestingly, more than the narrative it was the cinematic presentation, the craft and the artistry involved in the making of the film that left an indelible imprint on his mind. At college Bora was a regular in the plays and won many prizes. In 1994, Bora was adjudged Best Actor of Arya Vidyapeeth College. It was then that Bora realised his true calling. Not academics but theatre and film were where his heart truly belonged. After college, moving to Delhi to chase his dreams was therefore the ideal choice. In Delhi he enrolled himself as a dedicated pupil of theatre activist Berry John to hone his acting skills. Equipped with formal training in theatre and drama, Bora shifted base to Mumbai in 2004 to give flight to his cinematic ambitions. A number of short films and documentaries followed soon. However as ill luck would have it Bora had to come back to Assam due to situations beyond his control. After his return, Bora completed his Masters in Business Administration and joined a Multinational company as the Regional Head of North East. However his passion for drama would not let him rest. In 2014 Bora flew back to Mumbai and became actively engaged in a number of assignments. With quite a few short films and documentaries to his credit, Bora earned a lot of attention and appreciation. Bora worked in three short films as the Assistant Director within a short period of his return to Mumbai. It was during this period film maker Bhavin Wadia’s directorial venture Project Marathwada fell in his kitty. Project Marathwada is a film on farmers suicide in the Vidarbha and Marathwada region of Maharastra. Though he began as an assistant director, he was soon promoted as the Chief Assistant Director in the said project in recognition of his crucial role in roping in legendary actor Om Puri to play one of the lead roles. Getting legendary Om Puri to play a pivotal role in the film proved to be a challenge. A perfectionist that he was, Om Puri initially refused the role as he felt looked too robust and healthy to play the part of a debt ridden poor farmer with a frail appearance. When the matter was communicated to Bora by a distraught Wadia, Bora personally approached Om Puri. His reading of the character was so intricate detailed and meticulous that Om Puri could not say no and instantly agreed to be part of the prestigious project. With the likes of Daleep Taheel, Seema Biswas and Govind Namdeo in the film and coupled with the thematic premise of farmer’s suicide , it is sure to generate a lot of curiosity and draw in the crowds. A Short film titled Taxi directed by Arunjit Bora has got rave reviews. A harrowing tale of a female passenger who boards a taxi on the dark and lonely streets of Mumbai, the movie has the issue women’s safety and security as its prime focus. The movie has an overseas connection with its background score by American music composer Brandy Thomas. The haunting music deftly captures the sense of fear and danger overhanging the narrative. Also in the pipeline is Letters from Dad a poignant tale of a father –daughter relationship to be exclusively shot in Mumbai. Arunjit has also been signed in as the Creative Head of a Hindi TV serial to be shot in Assam. Apart from these, presently Bora is busy directing a web series. Not only this, Arunjit has also acted in a small role in the recently released Hindi movie Adrishya. Basically, in the cinematic craft Bora is self taught learning the nuances of film making from on line resources including books and videos. Along with his Bollywood assignments, his regional assignments also keeps Bora busy. Bora has scripted the story and screenplay of the Jinny Moholia directed movie Grey. Besides he is also the Creative Head and screenplay writer of yet another movie Dewka-the wings by the same director. Arunjit is also for movies with a social message as is evident from his involvement in the making of a short film Happy Birthday Joy. Produced by Zublee Foundaation, Happy Birthday Joy deals with
