My name is Alberto Alcaraz Cuauhtlequezqui López Jr. My Indigenous name means Eagle tattooed with Blood. I am a direct descendant of the Purépecha Indians of Michoacán, Mexico. My great-great-grandmother was a 116-year-old Purépecha Indian from Puruandido, Michoacán.
I was first introduced to the Mexicayotl, or the Mexican Red Road, at the age of 32 in San Jose, California, where I participated in a naming ceremony for the winter solstice. It was at this time that I began my journey seeking knowledge of my native Mexican identity and appreciation of my cultural history. That led me to form Huey Tlahtokan La Gran Palabra, Indigenous Cultural Diffusion of ChicagoAztlan. Eighteen years ago, I began to organize cultural events in my community, working with the late Maestro Yxayotl & Maestro Ocelocoatl, from Calpulli Tetzahuitl Tezcatlipoca & Zemanahuac Tlamachtiloyan from Mexhico Tenochtitlan. After organizing my first event in 2004, several universities approached me with an interest to expand my events to the elementary, high school, & university level, as I continued to focus on the Mexican community of Pilsen in Chicago where I grew up. At our peak, we organized the first of many Summer Solstice Aztec Dance Ceremonies, in addition to many multimedia presentations, clay workshops, Nahuatl language workshops, children's art workshops & film festivals.
I am also a Certified Clinical Perfusionist by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, (ABCP). With 20 years of experience being in charge of the heart-lung machine during open heart surgery. I keep patients alive when they are "halfway mostly dead" during heart transplants, lung transplants, valve surgery, or coronary artery bypass surgeries. I also care for and keep patients alive during advanced life support called Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), which is used in patients with Covid 19 also.
