What the Doc!

เรากำลังเปิดรับสมัครภาพยนตร์สารคดีเพื่อร่วมประกวดในเทศกาลครั้งปฐมฤกษ์นี้

The Festival will be held in August 2025 (exact dates to be announced later) in Bangkok. We are now accepting documentary film submissions to compete in this inaugural festival.

มนุษย์รังสรรค์วิธีการเล่าเรื่องอันหลากหลาย ทั้งนิทาน จิตรกรรม นวนิยาย ลำนำ บทเพลง บทกวี และภาพยนตร์ ผ่านการสั่งสมจินตนาการและประสบการณ์มากมาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องราวดี ร้าย ขบขัน หรือโศกเศร้า บางครั้งก็เหลือเชื่อ บ้างก็เกินจริง หรืออาจไม่จริงเลยก็มี หรือบางเรื่องไม่อาจแยกแยะได้ว่าส่วนใดจริงส่วนใดเท็จ ดังที่ปรากฏในประวัติศาสตร์ มหากาพย์ พงศาวดาร และตำนานต่าง ๆ ท่ามกลางความผันผวนและการเปลี่ยนผ่านของความรัก ความเกลียดชัง การทำลายล้าง สงคราม ความยากแค้น ภัยพิบัติ การล่มสลาย และการเกิดใหม่ที่หมุนเวียนทุกวี่วัน

สารคดีเป็นหนึ่งในเส้นทางการเล่าเรื่องเหล่านั้น แต่สารคดีคืออะไรกันแน่? นี่เป็นคำถามพื้นฐานที่เรายังคงแสวงหาคำตอบ เพราะสารคดีไม่มีคำนิยามที่ตายตัว และเพราะเรายังไม่สามารถระบุได้อย่างชัดเจนว่ามันคืออะไร

เทศกาลภาพยนตร์สารคดีนานาชาติ What the Doc! (WTD!) จึงถือกำเนิดขึ้นเพื่อสำรวจภูมิทัศน์อันหลากหลายของสารคดี ทุกวันนี้ปริมณฑลของสารคดีกว้างไกลนัก บางครั้งซับซ้อน บางครั้งซ้อนทับหรือเลือนกลืนไปกับแนวทางการเล่าเรื่องรูปแบบอื่น ๆ และเขตแดนของมันยังคงถูกผลักขยายออกไปอย่างไม่หยุดยั้ง

Humans have created various ways of storytelling – tales, paintings, novels, narratives, songs, poetry, films – through the accumulation of imagination and numerous experiences, whether good, bad, humorous, or sorrowful. Sometimes they’re incredible, sometimes exaggerated, or perhaps entirely untrue. For some stories, we don’t even know which parts are true and which are false, as evident in history, epics, chronicles, and legends. Amidst fluctuations and transitions of love, hatred, destruction, war, hardship, catastrophe, collapse and rebirth occurring every day.

Documentary is one path to tell these stories. But what is a documentary? This is a basic question that we still seek to answer, because documentary has no fixed definition, and because we still don’t know exactly what it is.

The International Documentary Film Festival What the Doc! (WTD!) was thus born to explore the diverse landscape of documentaries. Today, its realm is so vast, sometimes complex, sometimes overlapping or blending with other storytelling approaches, and its boundaries continue to be pushed further.
