Walta Gabriel Busulis is a Ugandan -Canadian filmmaker and an award-winning director. With a core focus on Afro-futurism, Africanism, global development perspective on black excellence and afro canadianism, Walta's journey in the film industry began in Ugandan cinema with a career spanning over a decade.
In 2013, Walta made his directorial debut with "Not Bride a Girl," His versatility as a writer, producer, and director shone in "Akello" (2016), a powerful narrative , selected in the Mashariki African film festival.
Walta's international presence expanded through participation in development labs like Uganda Film Festival Producers Lab 2013, 2014, 2015 (Uganda), Maisha Film Lab 2015, UNICEF-UNFPA, where he contributed to "Filming the Bridge on Ending FGM/C" in 2017, Preventing Sexual Violence Film Lab 2018 (London), Art Connections 2019, Ogo-tawa Black Arts Lab 2023 (Canada), Cinephilia Film and TV Development Workroom 2024 (USA), Interaction Doc Workshop 2024 (Serbia) in 2024 he won a grant from the Canada Arts council to further develop his upcoming short film (Zona & Neda).
Throughout his career, Walta has been a recipient of several prestigious global prizes and awards for his use of film as a tool to address pressing issues facing women and Africa. His works have been showcased and utilized for campaign and educational purposes worldwide, spanning countries such as Uganda, South Sudan, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, the United States, the Dominican Republic, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom.
In 2018, Walta's film "BiBi MTOTO" garnered acclaim, earning him an award for best director at the Coast Film Festival in Mombasa, Kenya. He is an alumnus of the Toronto Metropolitan University Film Studies program, reflecting his commitment to continuous learning and growth in the film industry.
In 2024 he was awarded a development grant for his upcoming short film Zona & Neda by the Canada Arts Council, the film will be shot on location in Uganda in 2025 featuring Bwanika Felix.
His new short documentary focuses on the problems associated with Ugandan staple food in Canada and growing food costs."Matooke: Masaka to Toronto,"
