The Visual Anthropology Exhibition, as part of the World Anthropological Union (WAU) Congress, will be held November 3-8, 2025 in Antigua, Guatemala. The Congress, entitled “Unearthing Humanity: Critical and Urgent Epistemic Redefinitions in World Anthropologies,” will be the framework in which this exhibition will highlight visual contributions to anthropology.

Works of various genres (documentary, fiction, hybrid or animation) that contribute significantly to the fields of anthropology, visual anthropology, archaeology, ethnography or the study of intangible cultural heritage, among others, will be selected.

The selected works will be screened in person during the WAU 2025 Congress in Antigua, Guatemala, and will also be presented virtually during and after the event through the official WAU 2025 Congress website.

The selection committee is composed of international specialists in anthropology and independent filmmakers.

La Muestra de Antropología Visual, como parte del Congreso de la Unión Antropológica Mundial (WAU), se llevará a cabo del 3 al 8 de noviembre de 2025 en Antigua, Guatemala. El Congreso, titulado “Desenterrar la Humanidad: Redefiniciones Epistémicas Críticas y Urgentes en las Antropologías del Mundo”, será el marco en el cual esta muestra destacará contribuciones visuales a la antropología.

Se seleccionarán obras de diversos géneros (documental, ficción, híbrido o animación) que contribuyan de manera significativa a los campos de la antropología, la antropología visual, la arqueología, la etnografía o el estudio del patrimonio cultural inmaterial, entre otros.

Las obras seleccionadas serán proyectadas de forma presencial durante el Congreso WAU 2025 en Antigua, Guatemala, y también se presentarán de manera virtual durante y después del evento a través de la página oficial del Congreso WAU 2025.

El comité de selección está integrado por especialistas internacionales en antropología y cineastas independientes.

Rules & Terms

1. Requirements for the registration of films:
1.1. Registered works must have a premiere date after January 2023.
1.2. All works must have English subtitles.
1.3. All genres (documentary, fiction, hybrid, animation) are welcome, as long as they represent an original contribution to anthropology.
1.4. Student films or films linked to academic production are accepted, as well as independent and authorial productions.
1.5. We do not accept commissioned works or works that have been filmed for advertising purposes for private companies and/or organizations.
1.6. The duration of the works is not limited:
- Works up to 20 minutes are considered short films.
- Works up to 50 minutes are considered medium-length films.
- Works longer than 50 minutes are considered feature films.
1.7. The works submitted must complete a form that includes:
- Synopsis.
- Logline.
- Credits.
- Filmography.
- Poster or stills.
- A viewing link (private or password-protected) that will remain active 7 months after the call for entries closes.
1.8. Each entry must include a paragraph (no more than 1000 characters) explaining its contribution to the field of anthropology and/or ethnography.
1.9. The materials for the official catalog and website (synopsis, credits, biofilmographies, directors' photos, stills, posters, and participation in festivals and exhibitions) will be extracted from the online registration form.

2. Screening and rights of the films:
2.1. Each person who registers a film must assign screening rights during the Exhibition, which will be held in Antigua, Guatemala, November 3-9, 2025.
The selected works will be screened in person during the WAU 2025 Congress in Antigua, Guatemala, and will also be available virtually during and after the event through the official website of the WAU 2025 Congress.

1. Requisitos para la inscripción de obras:
1.1. Las obras inscritas deberán tener una fecha de estreno posterior a enero de 2023.
1.2. Todas las obras deben contar con subtítulos en inglés.
1.3. Son bienvenidos todo tipo de géneros (documental, ficción, híbrido, animación), siempre y cuando representen un aporte original a la antropología.
1.4. Se aceptan películas de estudiantes o ligadas a la producción académica, así como producciones independientes y autorales.
1.5. No se aceptan obras por encargo o que hayan sido filmadas con fines publicitarios para empresas privadas y/o organizaciones.
1.6. La duración de las obras no está acotada:
- Obras de hasta 20 minutos son consideradas cortometrajes.
- Obras de hasta 50 minutos son consideradas mediometrajes.
- Obras de más de 50 minutos son consideradas largometrajes.
1.7. Las obras inscritas deben completar un formulario que incluya:
- Sinopsis.
- Logline.
- Créditos.
- Filmografía.
- Póster o stills.
- Un link de visionado (privado o con contraseña) que permanezca activo 7 meses después de cerrada la convocatoria.
1.8. Cada obra inscrita debe incluir un párrafo (de no más de 1000 caracteres) explicando su aporte al campo de la antropología y/o la etnografía.
1.9. Los materiales para el catálogo y la web oficiales (sinopsis, créditos, biofilmografías, fotos de directores/as, stills, póster, y participación en festivales y muestras) se extraerán del formulario de inscripción online.
2. Proyección y derechos de las obras:
2.1. Cada persona que inscriba una obra deberá ceder los derechos de proyección durante la Muestra, que se llevará a cabo en Antigua, Guatemala, del 3 al 9 de noviembre de 2025.
2.2. Las obras seleccionadas se proyectarán de manera presencial durante el Congreso WAU 2025 en Antigua, Guatemala, y también estarán disponibles de forma virtual durante y después del evento a través de la página oficial del Congreso WAU 2025.
