Writer, Producer, Filmmaker
Vicki Syal is a Brazilian-Indian filmmaker and producer based in Los Angeles, California. A first-generation American, her work is inspired by social issues, politics, and satire. With a background in writing and education, she is currently an in-house producer and post-production supervisor at an indie studio in East Los Angeles. Vicki has been developing projects since 2015. Her 10-episode web series, “Pre-Production,” which she wrote, produced, and starred in was an Official Selection in The Broad Humor Film Festival, (2017,) and a Semi-Finalist in the Los Angeles Independent Film Awards. Her Short “Angie,” which she wrote, produced, and starred in was an Official Selection for the Indie Night Film Festival and the Focus International Film Festival (2018), it was a finalist in both the TMFF and Film Carpet, and it was an Award Winner for the International Independent Film Awards. Her short film “Wonder” her directorial debut was an Official Selection for both the Golden State Film Festival (2019,) and Flickfair (2022,) as well as a semi-finalist in the Etheria Film Festival and Jellyfest. (2019.) in 2018, she produced El Chalino in Los Angeles and then traveled to El Salvador where she produced La Campana, both of which were Official Selections at LALIFF (2018). La Campana went onto win the ICARO in 2019. Additionally, Vicki produced THE 90 DAY PLAN (2019), which won Best of Fest at HBO Women in Comedy Festival 2020 (Powderkeg/Feigco award), was an official selection at LAAPFF (2020), official selection PBS LatinXperience (2020), was acquired by WarnerMedia OneFifty, and is available on HBOMax. She also produced the musical comedy BERTIE THE BRILLIANT (2022) was made in collaboration with WarnerMedia OneFifty and the Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB) and will be available on PBS. She also produced “Science of Dreams,” an online docs-series for Healthline, which was an Official Selection for the Indie Shorts Awards New York. (2022) Most recently, her short film Stand Out, which she co-wrote, directed, produced, and starred in was an Official Selection in the Los Angeles Comedy Festival and the NFMLA and the recipient of an Award of Merit from the Global Shorts Film Festival. Additionally, in fall of 2022 Vicki completed co-writing an 18-episode fiction series AMORES Y MENTIRAS (a modern-day spoof of a 90s Telenovela) that was bought by Sonoro Media, the series will air on iHeart radio (in both English and Spanish) in 2023. Vicki received her BA in Creative Writing from Pitzer College and her Screenwriting Certificate from Writer’s Bootcamp. She has field experience as a Director, Line Producer, Story Producer, Associate Producer, Lead Producer, Assistant Director, and Post-Production Supervisor. To date, she has produced more than twelve short films and three feature films.
