Βαρβάρα – this name originates from Greek and means "foreign woman."
She was born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine, where, in 2021, she began studying feature film directing at KNUTKiT named after Karpenko-Karyi. Due to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she was forced to flee the war to Poland, initially believing it would only be for a short while. However, this "short while" turned out to be complicated and long, and her previous life never returned.
Varvara Zarytska is a fifth-year directing student at Poland Łódź Film School. In her latest mockumentary film, „How to Fall Out of Love”, shot on 16mm film stock, she explores the themes of breakups, memory, and the impossibility of communication. Dreams and memories, psychoanalysis—Lacanian and beyond—the impossibility of love and fulfilling its desires, and a woman's attempts to define herself in the modern world are topics that inspired Varia throughout the creative process. Some of these themes resonate more strongly, while others are more subtly woven into the film's narrative. Combining formal experimentation with personal experiences, she speaks with her voice—honestly and without shame. Her voice, as both the author and protagonist of the film, resonates from behind the camera as well.
Varvara has also directed several short documentary films—„War and guilt” and „Life on Pause”—and fiction films, including „The Other” and „The Art of Farewell”. Her work is characterized by experiments with form and narrative while also focusing on the audience—she aims to move, amuse, surprise, and touch them. Exploring seemingly simple stories that turn out to be ambiguous and filled with hidden tragedy helps inspire reflection on the complex world we live in.
She believes hope and truth lie in art, even if she often feels like a "foreign woman."

Βαρβάρα – imię to pochodzi z języka greckiego i oznacza „kobietę obcą”.
Urodzona i wychowana w Kijowie, w Ukrainie, gdzie w 2021 roku rozpoczęła studia na kierunku reżyseria filmu fabularnego w KNUTKiT im. Karpenki-Karego. Z powodu pełnoskalowej rosyjskiej inwazji na Ukrainę musiała, jak wówczas myślała, na chwilę uciec przed wojną do Polski. „Chwila” okazała się jednak zagmatwana i długa, a poprzednie życie już nigdy nie powróci.
Varvara Zarytska jest obecnie studentką IV roku reżyserii w Szkole Filmowej w Łodzi.
W swoim najnowszym filmie mockumentalnym „Jak się odkochać”, zrealizowanym na taśmie 16 mm, eksploruje temat rozstania, pamięci i niemożliwości porozumienia się. Sny i wspomnienia, psychoanaliza – lacanowska i nie tylko – niemożliwość miłości i realizacji pragnienia, próby kobiety zdefiniowania siebie we współczesnym świecie to tematy, które inspirowały Varię w całym procesie tworzenia. Niektóre z tych tematów wybrzmiewają wyraźniej, inne są głębiej ukryte w tkance filmu. Łącząc formalne eksperymenty z osobistymi doświadczeniami, mówi własnym głosem – szczerze i bez wstydu. Jej głos, jako autorki i bohaterki filmu rozbrzmiewa także zza kamery.
Varvara zrealizowała również kilka krótkometrażowych filmów dokumentalnych – „Wojna i wina”, „Życie na pauzie” – oraz fabularnych – „Inny” i „Sztuka pożegnania”. Jej twórczość charakteryzuje się eksperymentami z formą i narracją, ale także skupieniem na odbiorcy – chce go poruszyć, rozśmieszyć, zaskoczyć, wzruszyć. Eksplorowanie z pozoru prostych historii, które okazują się niejednoznaczne i pełne ukrytej tragiki, pomaga w refleksji nad skomplikowanym światem, w którym żyjemy.
Wierzy, że nadzieja i prawda tkwią w sztuce,
