Ugochukwu Azuya is a filmmaker working and living in Lagos, Nigeria. His work deals with memory, sexuality, socio-political situations, and history within Nigerian and African context.
He has been mentored by Nigeria Art House directors like The S16 Collective comprising of directors C.J Obasi, Abba T. Makama, Mike Omonua which came the opportunity to work on films such as Juju Stories and Mami Wata. Critically acclaimed films which have gone on to festivals like Sundance and Locarno.
Ugochukwu has dedicated himself to building a practice that consists of experimenting with film language. Both in its form and notions of dramaturgy in a way that's contrary to western conventions and practices of filmmaking and storytelling approach being radical in theme, subject, images and sounds he employs. He has also gone on to co-produce a slate of eclectic short films with young upcoming directors such as Wale Matuluko etc and many more
Ugochukwu's debut short film "Swimming in the Sea of Trauma": A ghost story about the memory of the Biafra War had its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam 2023. It has gone on to be screened at several film festivals in Africa, Europe and the Americas to much acclaim.
