Films
Selected films are not published online without submitters' permission (except publicly released films). Note that short films as well as feature films of any genre and format up to 40 minutes (short films) and 140 minutes (feature films) are accepted.

All films must have been made in or after 2021 and have English subtitles (except for music videos and unless English is the main language spoken). Any genre and format is accepted (from 1 minute films to long, narrative/artistic films).

Entries that are submitted in and after the 25th day of each month will automatically be considered for the following month's edition (excepting the films submitted in categories that have below 3 films at the moment of entrance. 3 films per category must be selected in order for that specific category to receive awards.)

All winning films will be given a printable Award Certificate.

There will be 6 Nominations for the ‘Film of the Month’ Award, and three for each ‘Category’/’Individual’ award.

All films of any genre and format are eligible to win/be nominated to one or more of these awards.

The audience award prize will be given to the film that gets the most votes and has an average of at least 4 stars out of 5.

A film with more than one category (e.g. Animation and Experimental) can only be nominated for one ‘Animation’ or ‘Experimental’ award.

Even though, as usual, each film has its own page, the submitter can decide whether they want their full film uploaded/embedded on our website. If not, a trailer must be provided. Keep in mind that the judging will be the same.

Winners of the ‘Film of the Month’ award have 30 days from the day of announcement to claim their prize money. After this period, prizes will be revoked.

Screenplays
The screenplay competition runs every two months and is exclusive to FilmFreeway. Filmmakers can enter their screenplay (of any genre, up to 140 pages) to the competition by also requesting a promotional review. They will not be published anywhere. Screenplay reviews will be received in 7-12 days. There will be quarter finalists, semifinalists and finalists out of which a winner, a runner-up and a second runner-up will be designated. Only two screenplays per filmmaker per edition are allowed. Up to the finals, the same writer can be nominated with two scripts while the winners (second runner-up, runner-up & screenplay award winner) will be three different writers each time. Only one screenplay will and can win the ‘Screenplay Award’. Digital award certificates will be given to semifinalists, finalists and winners.

Services
By submitting your request on our website you agree to let us use your submitted data to create what you have asked for. All PROMOTIONAL reviews will be published on our website and social platforms. You can also request the removal of your PROMOTIONAL review by the end of the monthly competition. As for CRITIQUE REVIEWS, they will not be published anywhere unless the filmmakers agree.

Rights
By submitting your film to our festival you agree that your piece of work (full film or trailer) can be uploaded/embed on our website. The filmmaker/institution that is submitting the film must own the rights to do so and is responsible for the content they are providing. By submitting, the filmmaker allows TMFF to create a page for their film without infringing copyright of any kind of form. Also, the entry fee and services fee is not refundable and we do not provide any feedback whether your project has been selected or not (except for paid feedbacks).

How does it work?

After the submission is complete and the film is accepted, we will upload/embed your film/trailer on our website for everyone to see. Winning films will be highlighted.

Notification
TMFF will announce the winners for every award on the last day of the month.

Winners, nominees and unsuccessful films can be deleted from the website after the monthly competition ends as long as the submitter decides to do so.

TMFF is an excellent experience: great communication and any questions I had were answered with such a speedy response. Hugely grateful to have been selected (and even won!) at this amazing festival - thank you to the team and also for supporting new and indie filmmakers!

Thanks so much for the kind words, Aresa!

  • Good communication when questions were asked and the website and laurels are nicely designed but the setup is a bit confusing. Finding the monthly selections is a bit tricky and the amount of selected films changed very gradually over the month so you never know how many films you'll be up against for awards until the day of the awards.

I also found the idea of the Audience Award (which we won) a bit odd where films aren't expected to be available to watch and a trailer will suffice. I asked for my film to be uploaded so that people could watch it and rate it but very few others did the same making it a bit lopsided and pointless.

I'd have loved if there were networking opportunities with the other filmmakers or any kind of feedback from the judges beyond the award and nominations but alas it was silence on that front.

It's worth submitting if you can use it to your advantage on social media but you'll have to do a lot of the legwork yourself as you're unlikely to get promoted by the festival's Instagram unless you pay extra for a review.

Ultimately it's a slickly designed, decently run laurel mill with minimal interaction.

    Response from festival:

    Hello Richard,

Thank you for your thoughtful review and for highlighting areas where we can improve. We’d like to address a few points to clarify how our festival operates and why some of these processes are in place.

As a monthly festival, we aim to be efficient with our selection process, which means films are added gradually throughout the month. This rolling selection allows us to accommodate submissions quickly and maintain the rhythm of our festival. It’s a necessary part of our monthly structure and ensures we can give each film a timely official selection.

We understand your perspective on the Audience Award. Allowing trailers for voting is essential because around 90% of filmmakers prefer not to have their full films available publicly, often due to eligibility rules for other festivals. If we limited the Audience Award to full films, participation would be so limited that it wouldn’t even be a competition anymore. This way, we ensure the Audience Award remains inclusive and fair for all participants.

We appreciate your desire for more engagement and feedback. While submissions have decreased recently, leading to fewer films per category (for instance, just six official selections in the fiction category this month compared to 20+ three or four years ago), we continue to prioritize quality over quantity in our selections. We strive to maintain a high standard, focusing on selecting films that truly stand out rather than increasing numbers for extra visibility.

We hope this context provides clarity on our processes, and we appreciate your suggestions to make our festival even better. Thank you again for your valuable feedback, and congratulations on winning the Audience Award!

  • Quick response and support for the candidates. Good luck! ♥️♥️

TMFF is amazing! In April 2024, our short film 'Everyone is Afraid' was honored with the awards for Best 2nd Short Film, Best Screenwriter, and Best Actress, and in August 2024, 'Repetitions' received the Best Feature Film award. The festival critiques for both films were fantastic. This festival and every person on the team are wonderful. And, We are eagerly awaiting the physical award for 'Repetitions. :))
