TJ Cheslea is a Toronto-based filmmaker whose work explores the quiet emotional tensions that exist within relationships, often focusing on intimate, performance-driven stories where silence and restraint carry the narrative.
With a background in acting and theatre, he brings a strong sensitivity to character and emotional nuance, creating films that examine vulnerability, identity, and the unspoken dynamics between people. His directing approach emphasizes collaboration with actors and restrained visual storytelling, allowing performance and subtle behavioral shifts to drive the emotional arc of a scene.
His most recent short film Brain Dead won Best Film at the 48 Hour Film Project Toronto in October, continuing a streak of recognition that includes Best Film and Best Director at the Toronto 48 Hour Sci-Fi Film Challenge for his film Transfusion Parallax. His earlier short Assist explored the ethical and emotional complexities surrounding assisted dying in Canada, while The Family Secret further developed his interest in character-driven narratives shaped by moral tension and emotional discovery.
In addition to his filmmaking work, TJ has a strong foundation in theatre. He co-founded the independent theatre collective Triple By-Pass Productions and later directed the original play It’s Always Hazy in Hamilton, which premiered at the Hamilton Fringe Festival and earned a Best Director nomination at the Broadway World Toronto Theatre Awards.
Alongside his directing work, TJ has built extensive experience in television production, working as a Production Coordinator on several series including CBC’s Bollywed, the docu-series A Year in the Snow, and the upcoming Snooki: The Paranormal Rookie. Bollywed, which follows a South Asian family running a bridal shop in Toronto’s Little India, became an important multicultural presence on Canadian television and received two Canadian Screen Award nominations in 2024. Working across these productions has strengthened TJ’s understanding of production logistics, collaboration, and the realities of bringing complex projects from concept to screen.
Through his directing work, TJ continues to develop a filmmaking practice grounded in emotional honesty, strong performances, and the belief that the most powerful stories often unfold in the quietest moments.
