Raised in Northwest Arkansas and currently living in Chicago, Spenser is an award-winning writer-director whose work centers around conversation-provoking stories wrapped in genre and characters who find themselves pushed to the margins.
As a theatre director, he was recently the Michael Maggio Directing Fellow at The Goodman Theatre, where he’s helmed "Stateville Voices" and worked alongside Tony Award winner Robert Falls on Rebecca Gilman’s "Swing State" and Adam Rapp’s "The Sound Inside." Regionally, he has worked at the Colorado New Play Festival, Street Corner Arts, A Red Orchid Theatre, Steppenwolf 1700, and Broken Nose Theatre, where he was an ensemble member for its first ten years. He has received Best Director honors from both Chicago (Jeff Awards) and Austin, TX (B. Iden Payne Award).
As a playwright, Spenser’s newest, "A Million Tiny Pieces," received the Elizabeth George Commission from South Coast Repertory and was developed at both the Pacific Playwrights Festival and the Colorado New Play Festival. His other plays include "Plainclothes," "Merge," the critically acclaimed audio drama "Primer," and the hit virtual play "The Spin." His work has received the M. Elizabeth Osborn Award from the American Theatre Critics Association and been named a finalist for the Harold & Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award.
Now as a screenwriter and film director, he's currently developing projects with A&E Studios, Busy B Entertainment, and others. His first pilot "Knox County Nights" was a Finalist at the Austin Film Festival, and he's in pre-production for his next short, "Snuggle," about a professional cuddler working the week before Christmas.
He is proud to be represented by both William Morris Endeavor + Heroes and Villains Entertainment.
