I am continuing my comics series of "Starseed + Her Psychic Warriors" in live action to scale up the drama proportionally to the gravity of the protagonists' undertaking, as they work to expand their consciousnesses and decolonize outer-space and the future. Central to the narrative structure of my work is emotional topography, as in each issue the main characters take turns having their minds explored by each other— in what they call the “Mindscape.” The Burren region in Ireland is renowned for its slab-stone landscape and flora carried as seeds by the wind from as far as Brazil and transplanted into the cracks between the rocks. As I prepare to film the retelling of Starseed’s arrival story from the side of the alien visitor instead of Alice, Wren and Sage’s, like these seeds, I see the transience of these characters and of my own artistic practice developing parallel to one another.

It has been five years since I first began filmmaking but it has only been a year and a half since we shot “Flight Risk” which I consider to be my first serious project. It is my most ambitious project to date, other than “Utopia” (web series pilot episode currently in production). It is my longest work and is a prequel to the “Starseed + Her Psychic Warriors'' series, with events that take place even before the first comic book, which introduces us to Starseed. This was the first time I had written, directed and executive produced a project of this scale and I consider it to be where my professional career seriously begins.

I imagine filmmaking as a practice of simulation. In an alternate reality safe from tangible consequence a programmer can run possibilities, foresee outcomes and learn what works and what does not. This programmer can add in characteristics that resemble base reality and generate others that are entirely new and unique to the simulation. Filmmakers have the liberty to conduct experiments that are too strange or too bold to be conducted in the ordinary world. It is therefore the duty of filmmakers to imagine and exhibit alternative realities so that audiences have the opportunity to envision life differently from the status quo and potentially mobilize to make these visions their reality.
