Yasmin Lee (she/they) is a Wofford alum writer-director and interdisciplinary artist. She uses multiple lenses to contemplate the relationship between the viewer and the intended performance of a subject. Elements of intimacy and closeness are present in each piece to offer a voice to the ghost of personality and disposition. Through this subtle disruption orchestrated by mixed media works, Lee invites vulnerability and humanity into the scene. The process she follows is driven by intuition, generational memory, and lived experiences that investigate immediate ideologies surrounding intersectionality and self-presentation. This marriage between seen and unseen identities enters a space where the central figures interrogate mass perceptions as a display of freedom and sincerity.
Lee has exhibited her work extensively in group and solo exhibitions in South Carolina. Her work has been exhibited at various film festivals and galleries, most recently at the Yale Unrehearsed Film Festival and the Judson-Morrissey New Media Header/Footer Digital Gallery. They've completed Yale University’s 2023 Summer Session Drama Program. Recently, Lee won the "Best South Carolina Filmmaker" award at the 2024 SC Underground Film Festival for their film "Girl Talks to God." Lee was accepted into the South Carolina Film Commission's screenwriter's lab program, the Wide Angle Program. The WIDE ANGLE PROJECT is a film and television production lab for underrepresented content creators in South Carolina, sponsored by the South Carolina Film Commission and Trident Technical College (Sponsors). The program fosters in-state product development, boosts inclusion in the production industry, maximizes entrepreneurial and professional opportunities for participants, and creates connections between production professionals from all backgrounds.
At this time, she's in pre-production of Surrounded. “Surrounded” is an Afro-surreal action short film that takes you into a warped yet familiar America. If you want to contribute to this film, stay tuned to @snowycactus.ent on Instagram.
