D’Angelo “D’Lo” Louis is a writer, director, and producer from Richmond, California—a place where resilience isn’t optional, it’s essential. Raised in an environment where survival demanded strength, he learned the value of hard work and accountability early. However, life’s obstacles led to a decade-long sentence in California’s correctional system. It was within those walls that he underwent a profound transformation. Encouraged by a close friend, D’Lo turned to writing, using storytelling as both an escape and a tool for self-discovery. What started as a way to pass the time evolved into a passion that would reshape his future.
When he was released in August 2018, D’Lo was determined to rewrite his own story. The same friend who had encouraged him to write—now a filmmaker—offered him his first opportunity in the film industry. Just five months after regaining his freedom, D’Lo found himself on the sets of major Hollywood productions, working as both a director’s and producer’s assistant on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Space Jam: A New Legacy. These early experiences introduced him to the intricacies of filmmaking, exposing him to high-level storytelling and world-building. He quickly developed a sharp eye for detail, an ability to navigate fast-paced productions, and a deep understanding of what it takes to bring complex stories to life.
Now, D’Lo is a Creative Executive at Proximity Media, the multimedia company behind critically acclaimed films such as Judas and the Black Messiah and Creed III. He played a key role in shaping these projects, earning an Associate Producer credit on Creed III and contributing to everything from story development to soundtrack selections. His experience in both narrative and documentary filmmaking allows him to bring authenticity and depth to the stories he helps create, ensuring they resonate with audiences on a profound level.
At the same time, D’Lo continues to establish himself as a filmmaker in his own right. His most recent directorial work, SHOEBOX, has earned multiple nominations on its festival run and won the Panavision Outstanding Short Film Award at the Micheaux Film Festival. This award included a Panavision equipment grant, providing crucial resources for his next projects. SHOEBOX is a reflection of D’Lo’s unique storytelling perspective, blending personal experience with universal themes of struggle, resilience, and hope.
Beyond fiction, D’Lo has directed and produced several documentaries, expanding his reach as a storyteller committed to shedding light on overlooked perspectives. His experience spans music videos, commercials, and artist management, allowing him to navigate different mediums while maintaining his signature style. Whether through scripted films or real-life narratives, his goal remains the same: to tell stories that matter.
From the streets of Richmond to the corridors of Hollywood, D’Lo’s career is a testament to transformation. He has turned adversity into opportunity, using film to amplify voices that often go unheard. Carving his own path, he continues to redefine what it means to rise above challenges, proving that reinvention is always possible. His work stands as a reflection of resilience, vision, and an unshakable belief that every story—no matter where it begins—deserves to be told.
