Samujjal Kashyap – National Award Winning Filmmaker (Indian). I believe in telling stories visually those are very local, original & authentic.
Over a decade long exercise of passion and hard work went by before earning the National Award in 2015 for my first Documentary Film "Tezpur 1962” under the Best Investigative Film category.
Starting off as a trained filmmaker from Manipal Media & Entertainment, Bangalore, I later specialised in visual effects from some of the top Institutes of India like Arena Animations Bangalore, Frameboxx before completing a range of certified technical courses. Since childhood I used to closely follow my father’s involvement in drama, theatre and television. So in that sense I was introduced to this medium at a very young age. It was a matter of time before I started working as a professional as I began my career as an editor in 2006 editing Assamese Feature Films, Documentaries, Ad Films and Music Videos. I was just 16 then and was often touted as being northeast’s youngest filmmaker of that period. It was my good fortune to get the opportunity to work with almost all the renowned directors from Assam. I have to my credit of directing about 500 episodes of fictional and documentary series with high viewership records for both national and regional medium. During this learning process I began to develop my own stories into films and my engineering background helped me to keep updated about new technologies like Cinematography, Color Grading, etc. Today, due to my tech-savvy leanings people often consult me for their big projects and they trust my inputs. Apart from conceptualizing and directing Ad-films for reputed Indian companies, I have conceptualized, directed and edited around seventy five Music Videos including award winning ones. Apart from winning the Best Music Video Director Award thrice, my Music Videos have garnered millions of views on YouTube and other music forums.
My two recent projects are ‘Maya Baidew’, a short fictional film that revolves around a small lower-middle class family trying to make both ends meet and ‘Moluwa’ (The Adorable One), a documentary that explores some interesting facets of Barpeta, the Temple Town of Assam.
‘Maya Baidew’ has won the Best Regional Short Film Award during this
year’s Rajasthan International Film Festival and has also been picked as
the official selection for the Dada Saheb Phalke International Film Festival, Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival & Toronto Lift-Off Film Festival.
