Hello, my name is Samuel Umphlett. I’m a 21-year-old film student attending Champlain College. Growing up in Bennington, Vermont, I’ve been rather fortunate to be surrounded by a beautiful environment - evergreen landscapes and mountains rising high above. Nature has always felt like the place where the world turns, holding within it many of the solutions to our wants and needs. My love for creating has been with me for as long as I can remember, which makes sense considering both of my parents work in the art industry. Surrounded by creativity from an early age, I naturally found my own path into filmmaking. Over the years, I gravitated toward the editing side of the craft, and since 2020, I’ve been editing professionally in the film business. As a creator, I see myself reflected in small but meaningful ways - even in details like my strawberry blonde hair, which I like to think of as a symbol of my vision: vibrant, distinct, and difficult to ignore. I aim to keep my ideas accessible and amenable to the viewer while still weaving in strong key concepts. At the same time, I strive for my work to balance “on the ginger line” - living in the space of controversy and conversation where ideas challenge, provoke, and resonate. Beyond technique, what truly drives me is my emotional connection to storytelling. I’ve always loved film, romances, and, most of all, people. Growing up, I was a teary-eyed kid, deeply empathetic and able to feel the pain of others. That emotional edge has stayed with me, and I believe it’s what allows me to connect so strongly with the stories I tell. When I watch or create films, I don’t just see characters, I feel them.
