The Salem State University Music and Dance Department, in collaboration with the Salem State University Center for Creative and Performing Arts, invites submissions of short HIP HOP dance films for screening at its inaugural Intergenerational Hip Hop Symposium.

Selected films will be screened at the Sophia Gordon Center for the Performing Arts January 31, 2025.

This festival aims to honor and acknowledge street dance as a higher art form within the academic realm, celebrating the participants, legends, and pioneers who have shaped the culture. We are seeking films that highlight the richness and diversity of hip hop and street dance styles. Submissions can feature (but are not limited to) Memphis Jookin, LA's Krump Dance, New York's Flexing & Bruk Up, West Coast Popping, and Afro-Latin House - all aforementioned and various street dance entries are highly encouraged to submit.

Film Festival History: The Salem State University International Dance Film Festival, held in 2020 and 2022, showcased a broad array of short dance films from around the globe through both in-person and remote screenings. In 2025, we are re-imagining the Festival as a platform for films that focus on hip hop dance as part of our inaugural Intergenerational Hip Hop Symposium, held January 30-February 2 on the Salem State University campus.

Join us in celebrating the powerful artistry and cultural significance of hip hop and street dance, elevating these forms to their rightful place in the world of academia and beyond.

Selected submissions will receive a screening fee of $100.
A COMMUNITY CHOICE AWARD will be conferred to the film with the most votes from audience members at the January 30 screening at the Salem State University Sophia Gordon Center for the Arts.
Please note: International submissions are welcome. However, we can only offer monetary awards to applicants with a US bank account due to complications with paying foreign vendors.

We seek original film and video works showcasing dance, specifically focusing on HIP HOP CULTURE. Please ensure your submission aligns with the following criteria:

1. Focus on Hip Hop Culture: Your film should center on one (or more) elements of Hip Hop culture, which includes the 9 pillars as coined by Versa-Style Non-Profit dance company: Breaking, MCing, Graffiti Art, DJing, Knowledge, Street Fashion, Street Language, Street Entrepreneurialism, and Street Dance Styles. We are particularly interested in films that explore these elements through the lens of street dance styles and convey a message reflecting these pillars.
2. Original Dance Films Only: We support work that highlights the moving body and dance in the context of Hip Hop. Compilations and documentation of live dance performances will not be considered. Your film must be an original creation for film or video.
3. Length and Production Date: Films should be no longer than 12 minutes and must have been produced after January 1, 2020.
4. Rights and Indemnification: The individual or entity submitting the film warrants that they hold all necessary rights for the submission of the film for exhibition in the Salem State University Hip Hop Dance Film Festival. This includes rights for use in related promotional and educational events prior to the festival and up to 24 months thereafter. The submitter shall indemnify and hold harmless Salem State University from any claims involving copyright, trademark, credits, royalties, publicity, and/or screening related to the film.
5. Screening Details: Films will be screened live on January 30. Exhibition formats and screening quality may change based on equipment availability and venue changes. Attendance at the in-person screening is NOT required.
6. Promotional Rights: Salem State University is granted the right to utilize and excerpt from any film or image submitted and accepted for exhibition at the festival for promotional purposes.
7. Submission Format: All accepted short films must be submitted as a digital file. Our preferred format is QuickTime: h.264 codec, 1920x1080 frame size at 30fps. Other formats may be used but will remain in their native format.
8. International Submissions: International submissions are welcome. However, due to complications with paying foreign vendors, monetary awards can only be offered to applicants with a US bank account.

Important Notes:
- Films must focus on street dance styles within Hip Hop culture and convey messages related to the 9 pillars.
- Please make sure your submission follows the film length and production date requirements.
- Double-check that you hold all necessary copyrights for your submission.

We look forward to receiving your films and celebrating the richness of Hip Hop culture through dance!
