Sakinah Iman is a Caribbean-American Award-Winning Actress, Singer-Songwriter, Educator, Spoken Word Artist, and Award-Winning Filmmaker of Jamaican and Garifuna descent, from Brooklyn, NY. For over a decade, Sakinah has devoted her artistic abilities to creating integrated art projects that engage audiences in sociopolitical change. Using performance arts such as spoken word, comedy, drama, and music, Sakinah has traveled the world with award winning educational theater company Catharsis Productions and Too Deep Entertainment, educating audiences of all ages on topics such as black/female empowerment, sexual assault/violence awareness and prevention, racial discrimination, social/self-awareness, and political activism.
As an independent Singer-Songwriter, Sakinah has headlined and showcased her original music at numerous venues in NYC from SOB’s and DROM to MajorStage and Ashford & Simpsons Sugar Bar. Her most popular single to date, “Waiting Tables,” has made it to the “Top 40” charts at #35 on the streaming platform ReverbNation and featured in an Off-off Broadway musical Buskers the Musical, where Sakinah was written into the play and invited to play herself for the show’s full run. Also, to her music, her entire original 5 track EP "Dun." has over 156 thousand streams in 57 countries on Spotify.
As an Actress/Filmmaker Sakinah has performed her work at several universities (including Columbia University), produced, directed, and starred in multiple short films. Sakinah currently has one of her films, “He Wants To Know My Number,” licensed by and featured on the major television network, Showtime-ViacomCBS. In the past few years alone, Sakinah won a total of 22 Film Festival awards including Best Film, Best Editor, Best Filmmaker, and Best Leading Actress, and been selected and placed in a total of 53 film festivals worldwide.
