SWFF was launched in 2009 as an opportunity to showcase the cinematic work of students and faculty from the SUNY system. The festival is a result of the vision and dedication of Phil Hastings, Associate Professor of Film and Video Arts at SUNY Fredonia, who founded the festival and grew it to become one of the top student film festivals in the Northeast.
Over the first seven festivals more than 800 students have submitted films and videos to the competition. Selected films and videos have gone on to garner awards at other regional and national film festivals.

In 2015, the SUNYWide Film Festival moved to SUNY Oswego, where is remained for two years. In 2017 the Festival moved to Buffalo State for the 8th annual Festival, and the 9th annual Festival returned to SUNY Oswego.

This year, for the 10th anniversary of the SUNYWide Film Festival, Purchase College, SUNY, is honored to host this prestigious student film festival.
