The Austrian film festival SUBURBINALE takes place at the eastern outskirts of Vienna, where the suburbs connect to the national park “Lobau”. We are hosted by the city of Groß-Enzersdorf, a small township 500 metres off the world city. We started out in 2017 and are very happy to move into our third season in 2019.
International filmmakers are welcome to share their views and stories on city expansion and the transitory areas between the urban and the rural. The festival wants to foster a inspiring dialogue about the challenges and chances of suburban life. We offer accomodation and traveling support, depending on our seasonal availability to filmmakers who are presenting their work at our festival.
In 2019 you can also submit your films on "sustainability" for a special Programm during the Illmitzer Gespräche in Oktober. All selected filmmakers will be invited to the conference and the films will be shown at the local cinema.
We accept all cinematic forms. Be it narrative, documentary, essayistic or experimental. All filmmakers regardless of experience and budget are welcome to submit their works. To be seleced your work must have a connection to our central theme - "THE SUBURBAN."
As all cinemas in the area have been closed by now the festival appropriates places that have lost their function as its playing grounds. This establishes an expanded dialog between film, space and audience that goes beyond classical cinema offerings.
All submissions will be viewed by members of our international Jury.
The SUBURBINALE is a non competitive festival.
All films chosen for the official selection will receive the "official selection" Laurel.
Our selection jury consists of international experts, and we ll try to get your film as much attention as possbible.
