THE FESTIVAL

SA INDIE FILM FEST is South Africa’s biggest independent film festival, featuring events across all of SA’s major cities. For 2020, we’re presenting events in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town to bring filmmakers and filmgoers an unforgettable selection of independent cinema.

Since our first edition in 2018, SA Indie Film Fest has celebrated local and international short-form cinema through showcasing short films, animation, documentaries, music videos and VR. For the first time, we’re presenting a selection of feature-length films and documentaries from around the world that encompass the same independent spirit.

The festival boasts a prestigious jury comprising of some of the most prolific professionals in filmmaking today. The 2019 jury featured Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Black Sails, Pirates of the Caribbean III), Kim Engelbrecht (The Flash, Dominion), Enhle Mbali-Maphumulo (Thisa, Rockville), Sean Cameron Michael (24, Blood Drive) and many more accomplished filmmaking talents.

Everyone involved in the festival, from the organisers to the jury have a heartfelt love for indie film. As independent filmmakers ourselves, we understand the disappointments and thrills that come with the territory. This festival aims to celebrate all the highs, lows, hard work and creativity of indie filmmaking!

  • High standard of excellence upheld regarding film finalists, general organization & communication was excellent. Incredible vibe on the day despite the weather, individual attention given and all filmmakers were encouraged to break the ice and socialize. A great experience all round!
Massive congratulations to Ryan Kruger & James C. Williamson on this initiative. Highly recommend this festival!

My short "Once Upon a Planet" screened here. Although I could not personally attend, I will say that the communication was great. I was able to confer with the festival directors, they responded to my tweets, promoted my films online, all that jazz. Hope I can submit again and hopefully attend next year with another film!
