Professor Roman Shirman (25.10.1952) is one of the leading and most respected film directors in Ukraine. In 1975, he graduated with honors from the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow. Author of more than 50 documentaries and feature films, television programs. Roman Shirman collaborated and continues to work with leading film studios and television channels (Kiev film studio of popular science films, National Cinema of Ukraine, Ukrainian film studio of documentaries, Interfilm, Cinema Studios, ICTV, INTER, Russia and others). Roman Shirman is a laureate of many national and international film festivals. Among his awards are the Grand Prix of the 16th Open Documentary Film Festival "Russia" (2005). Grand Prix of the X Balkan International Film Festival of Films for Children and Youth (2009). Grand Prix and Prize for directing the VIII International Festival of Television Programs “Velvet Season” (Ukraine, 2004). In many films, Roman Shirman acts not only as a director, but also as a writer, screenwriter and actor. He was the host of the weekly television program “Culture Splash?”, Where he also acted as a script writer and stage director (INTER TV channel, 2003-2004). Along with work in films and on television, Roman Shirman successfully conducts teaching work. In 1989-1990 he teaches directing at the film department of the Kiev State Institute of Theater Arts named after I. Karpenko-Kary. From 1997 to the present, he teaches directing, heads the departments of directing and film and television art at the Institute of Cinema and Television of the Kiev National University of Culture and Arts. In 2014-2018 - professor, artistic director of the director's course at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He has the academic title “Associate Professor” (2004), “Professor” (2008). He is the author of six books on directing and screenwriting: “Television Directing” (2004), “Alchemy of Directing” (2008), “Smart Television” (2011), “Musicals in Film and Television” (2015), “Lectures on Directing” documentary films read at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv ”(2015),“ Director's Design in Film and Television ”(2019). Since 2009, Roman Shirman - Secretary of the Board of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine. Winner of the Prize of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine named after Lesya Ukrainka for the best work for children (2009). Winner of the prize of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine and the Ministry of Culture named after Felix Sobolev (2006). He was awarded the state award - honorary title Honored Artist of Ukraine (2002).
