Robert Cantu is a filmmaker based in Austin, Texas. Born in Corpus Christi and raised in Houston, he developed a lifelong passion for cinema despite not attending film school. In 1998, he moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue a career in filmmaking. During his five years there, Robert gained hands-on experience across multiple departments on a wide range of productions-from student films and independent projects to major studio sets on the Universal Studios backlot. His roles included boom operator, production assistant, and producer's assistant, allowing him to develop a deep understanding of every aspect of film production.
In 2005, Robert returned to Houston and enrolled in a culinary arts program. After graduation, he spent 12 years working professionally as a line cook and chef. However, his passion for filmmaking ultimately brought him back to the camera. In 2018, he wrote and directed Jason Z, a fan film inspired by the Friday the 13th franchise, marking his return to directing and solidifying his interest in the film noir genre.
Since then, Robert has written, produced, and directed eight short films. He cites Clint Eastwood and Oliver Stone as his greatest inspirations and considers their work to be his most influential creative and cinematic teachers.
