Rex Jones, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, is an Assistant Professor of Broadcast & Digital Journalism in the Department of Communication at Mississippi State University. Rex’s body of work includes films that have been broadcast nationally on public television, won awards from various organizations, and been chosen as official selections of festivals worldwide.
At Mississippi State, Rex teaches CO 2333 - Intro to Television Production, CO 3873 - Public Relations Multimedia, CS 3383 - Creative Services Video Production (Documentary), CO 3713 - Digital Communication, CS 3383 - Creative Services Video Production (Music Video), CO 4124 - Topics in Film (History & Theory of Documentary), and CO 4XXX/6XXX Environmental Multimedia (new course coming in Fall 2025).
Rex's latest films, STEVE HOLLAND: JESUS WAS A DEMOCRAT (2023) and LIBATION & LEGISLATION (2023), won Awards of Merit in 2024 from the Mississippi Historical Society. Other films include CAMILLE: THE ORIGINAL MONSTER STORM (2019), FLAG FLAP OVER MISSISSIPPI (2018), LA FRONTERA (2017), and LONGLEAF: THE HEART OF PINE (2016), which were broadcast on select PBS stations nationwide. BEAUTIFUL JIM (2014) won the Programmers’ Choice Award at the Crossroads Film Festival, A TIME TO ALL THINGS (2014) won the Heritage Award in Preservation Education from the Mississippi Heritage Trust, and A PICKUP LOAD OF PIGS (2011) won the Award for Outstanding Media Product from the Wildlife Society. Rex is also the co-author of LECILE: THIS AIN'T MY FIRST RODEO (2015), which was the winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award for Excellence in Western Literature.
Before returning to his alma mater, Rex was a filmmaker with the Southern Documentary Project at the University of Mississippi and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Southern Studies in the MFA in Documentary Expression program at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture. As a core faculty member of the MFA program, he taught SST 537 - Documenting the South in Film, SST 538 - Advanced Documentary Film, and SST 610 - MFA Seminar. He also chaired several thesis committees.
After graduating from Mississippi State University with a BS in Computer Engineering and an MBA, and enjoying a long career in the IT industry, Rex earned an MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking from Montana State University, where he produced the Webby-award winning TERRA: The Nature of Our World video podcast series.
