Rafael Van Hayden is a Brazilian filmmaker with a passion for fantasy cinema.

He directed and wrote the short films CRANIUM, MAGNETIC GHOST, FROM WHISPERS TO THUNDER!, and the feature films FEAR IS JUST THE BEGINNING and SALTIMBANCOS.

He also works as an editor, assistant director, and producer.

His short film MAGNETIC GHOST won the awards for best short film and best direction at the Rio Fantastik Fest 2022, best editing at Fantasnoia 2021, and best horror short film at the Only The Best Film Awards 2022.

His feature film FEAR IS JUST THE BEGINNING... which seeks to map the current landscape of Brazilian horror cinema and answer the question: what is so fascinating about producing our worst nightmares?, won the award for best documentary at the Monstro de Jacareí Festival 2024 and the São Bernardo do Campo Film Festival 2024, also receiving honorable mentions at the Morce-GO Vermelho Festival 2023 and the ABC Cinema Retomada Showcase 2024.

The documentary FROM WHISPERS TO THUNDER!, about female representation in horror films, won the award for best fantastic documentary at the Monstro de Jacareí Festival in 2025. The feature film SALTIMBANCOS received the "Djanho's Nightmare!" award for the terrifying atmosphere created by the film at the 2025 Djanho! Fantastic Film Festival.

He is currently working on the production of another documentary about Brazilian horror cinema, scheduled for release in 2027.

Seu curta-metragem FANTASMA MAGNÉTICO ganhou os prêmios de melhor curta-metragem e melhor direção no Rio Fantastik Fest 2022, melhor montagem no Fantasnoia 2021 e melhor curta-metragem de terror no Only The Best Film Awards 2022.

Seu longa-metragem O MEDO É SÓ O COMEÇO... que procura mapear o cenário do atual cinema de horror brasileiro e responder à pergunta: o que existe de tão fascinante em produzir os nossos maiores pesadelos?, ganhou o prêmio de melhor documentário no Festival Monstro de Jacareí 2024 e no Festival de Cinema de São Bernardo do Campo 2024, recebendo também menções honrosas no Festival Morce-GO Vermelho 2023 e na Mostra Retomada ABC de Cinema 2024.

O documentário DOS SUSSURROS AOS TROVÕES!, sobre a representação feminina nos filmes de terror, venceu o prêmio de melhor documentário fantástico no Festival Monstro de Jacareí em 2025.

O longa-metragem SALTIMBANCOS recebeu o prêmio Pesadelo do Djanho!, pela atmosfera de terror criada pelo filme, no Festival Djanho! De Cinema Fantástico 2025.

Atualmente trabalha na produção de mais um documentário sobre o cinema de terror brasileiro, previsto para ser lançado em 2027.
