Rafael Saar has a master's degree in Cinema and Audiovisual from Universidade Federal Fluminense, specialist in Cultural Management from Universidade Cândido Mendes and a bachelor's degree in Cinema from UFF. Saar directed short films, among them “After Everything”, winner of over 10 awards, such as Best Actor for Nildo Parente in Festival de Brasília do Cinema Brasileiro and Best Foreign Film at UNCIPAR. “Birdman” was screened in several festivals worldwide and it is part of “El roce de los cuerpos”, an itinerant Reina Sofía’s showcase. As Researcher in “Naked Eye” (Joel Pizzini, 2012), he was awarded in Festival de Brasília. Rafael edited “Sea of Fire” (Pizzini, 2014), short in competition at Berlinale 2015. His first full length documentary “Yorimatã” has been awarded as Best Film by the audience and jury at In-Edit International Music Documentary Film Festival 2015 and It was released in 2016. In 2023, Peixe abissal, about the artist Luís Capucho, premiered at Mostra Aurora at the Tiradentes Film Festival. The film was awarded Best Documentary at Queer Lisboa and Best Direction at FIDBA - Buenos Aires International Documentary Film Festival.
