  • 🌍 Festival Review: Culture Connects Us at Power24 International Film Festival — “The Story of the Voiceless” 🌍

It is my great joy with deep honor to share that our internationally acclaimed, award-winning documentary feature, Culture Connects Us, made its continental premiere at the Power24 International Film Festival in Durban, South Africa and proudly received the Jury Award for Sector Stories, one of the festival’s most prestigious honors!

Held at the legendary Bat Centre, this year’s Power24 Festival was a radiant gathering of voices, visions, and stories from across the globe and a celebration of humanity in all its colors. With its theme, “The Story of the Voiceless,” Power24 highlighted the power of storytelling to uplift communities and amplify perspectives too often overlooked. The festival selected 70 projects from across the world for its three-day program and honored 30 of them with awards recognizing excellence in filmmaking and social impact.

Culture Connects Us was deeply aligned with Power24’s mission, as the festival shines a light on women, people with disabilities, rural filmmakers, LGBTQIA storytellers, emerging artists, and other previously marginalized voices. To have our film premiere in this space, surrounded by such courage and creativity, is nothing short of transformational. Power24 team created a space that not only elevated film but also honored the lived experiences of those who make and inspire it.

And to premiere it on the Motherland, in Durban — eThekwini, “the bay” – feels like destiny fulfilled. Durban is a city of deep ancestral resonance: the land of Shaka Zulu, a crossroads of Zulu, Indian, Coloured, and White heritage, and a place where ocean, river, and history converge. It is also a Sister City to New Orleans, which if you know me—is a poetic connection, and one that perfectly mirrors our film’s heartbeat, the rhythm of Palenque, community, resilience, and creative resistance.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Power24 organizers, jurors, and fellow filmmakers for this unforgettable welcome — and for recognizing Culture Connects Us with the Jury Award for Sector Stories.
To premiere in Durban, in The Bay, among such visionaries, is a full-circle moment we will cherish always. 🌅🎥✨

I’m truly grateful to have been part of the 2025 Power24 International Film Festival and honored that Rediscovering Fanon was awarded in the category of Best Documentary. This recognition is especially meaningful during the centenary of Frantz Fanon. Receiving it from a festival that champions vulnerable communities—including women, youth, rural dwellers, and the disabled—makes the honor even more profound. My thanks to Power24 for its commitment to inclusivity and to uplifting marginalized voices, a mission that resonates deeply with Fanon’s legacy and with the spirit of this film.
