Parvathi Nayar
Chennai-based multidisciplinary visual artist and writer, Parvathi Nayar, works with film, complex drawings, installations, text and photography. Her films and artworks talk about different engagements with our environment, urban memory, waterscapes and sustainability.
Parvathi’s films have featured in video/film shows such as Critical Zones – Curated Videos (Science Gallery Bangalore, 2024), Waters of Change (International Web-based, 2021), <de>confine International Digital Media Art Festival, (Web-based, 2020), 20th Madurai International Documentary & Short Film Festival (2018), Against Nature (Kochi, 2016).
Her film By the Mouth of the River was selected for viewing as part of We Are Ocean by Artport_Making Waves - Marseille, Berlin, Venice, (2019-2021). Her videos have been critically acclaimed as part of her solos such as Atlas of Reimaginings (2018, Chennai), At the Heart of the Question (2018, Singapore), Haunted by Waters (2017, Chennai), Dissonant Images: Drawing in Time, (2016, New Delhi), The Ambiguity of Landscapes (2014, Chennai). Her film Seaspeaker is featured in the exhibition “The Living Ocean” (Dakshinachitra Museum, Chennai, 2024), has received an environmental Generation Restoration Award 24 from Wolters Kluver and been selected for viewing at the 16th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), India, in 2024.
Parvathi’s notable solo exhibitions include "Atlas of Re-Imaginings" and “Drawing is a Verb” while her installations, such as "Dreamcatcher", “Ocean’s Breath” and "Chicken Run," engage with public spaces and diverse mediums. Parvathi's global presence in group shows, biennales, films featured in international festivals, and her contributions as a writer underscore her multifaceted artistic career. She is a TedxChennai speaker (“Seeing the world through Different Lenses”, 2016) and TedxMumbai (“The Secret Ingredient of Creativity”, 2018).
Parvathi received her Masters in Fine Art from Central St Martins College of Art and Design, London, on a Chevening scholarship.
