Oisín Byrne is an award-winning director, writer, and producer of British and Irish heritage. Born and raised in Bristol, he initially pursued a career in music in his twenties, collaborating with various bands and working with Mercury Prize winner Roni Size. His early experiences on music video productions sparked a growing interest in visual storytelling, eventually leading him to shift his focus to film directing.
Byrne earned a first-class honours degree in Filmmaking & Creative Media from the University of the West of England in 2015, followed by a Master’s in Film Directing from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2017. During his time at Goldsmiths, his short film Twenty Minutes was selected for BAFTA-qualifying festivals including Encounters, Aesthetica, and Sarasota, and was nominated for the Creative Filmmaker Award.
He went on to direct two award-winning short films: Disconnect, featuring Nitin Ganatra, and Public Discourse. Both were screened internationally and received multiple accolades, including Best Script. In 2018, Byrne joined BAFTA Crew and founded Parameter Films, which produced Public Discourse.
Most recently, Byrne directed the award-winning short documentary Living In My Car, which explores housing instability during the UK’s cost-of-living crisis. The film has won multiple awards, including Best Documentary Short Film at the Docuworld Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Stratford-upon-Avon Film Festival, and was officially selected for the 2025 Brighton Rocks Film Festival.
Coming from a family of musicians, Byrne developed a love for music and storytelling from an early age. Born in St. Pauls to a second-generation Irish family, he grew up in The Dings, a working-class estate in Bristol. His father, an Irish painter and folk singer, and his mother, a Bristol-born primary school teacher, shaped his creative outlook.
While Byrne’s primary focus is writing and directing, he is also experienced in producing, screenwriting, cinematography, and editing, bringing a versatile and collaborative approach to his work.
