Born and raised in Kolkata, Niladri Roy has always believed that stories lie hidden in everyday life—waiting for the right frame to bring them alive. Immersed in music and culture from an early age, he was naturally drawn to photography and storytelling, which eventually led him to the craft of film editing.
An alumnus of Patha Bhavan and Calcutta University, Niladri began his career early, gaining hands-on experience with projects that both challenged and inspired him. Over the years, he has edited a wide range of films and documentaries that have left a lasting impression—among them Shankhachil (winner of the 63rd National Award for Best Bengali Film), Raahgir, Mahalaya, and Parikrama, the first official Indo-Italian co-production. Each project has been a unique journey, enriching his craft and deepening his understanding of people and their stories.
In 2025, his work on Moving Focus earned him the prestigious National Film Award for Best Editing (Non-Feature)—a recognition that he describes as both unexpected and deeply fulfilling.
Beyond cinema, Niladri is equally passionate about music. A multi-instrumentalist, he often experiments with sounds and has even contributed instruments such as the Dotara and Banjo to film background scores. This musical instinct naturally informs his editing, giving his work a distinctive rhythm and flow. Looking ahead, he continues to explore new ways of weaving music into the art of storytelling.
