For me, I have already reached my dreams in the film/tv industry. Since I could talk I wanted to work in this industry and now every day I breathe, eat and live this industry and I couldn't love it more or be happier with where it's taken me!
I started in the entertainment industry in the world of music, modelling, and theater at the age of 5. When I was 16 I was scouted by some agencies in Toronto and began my acting career in the film and television industry. It was always tough growing up with a single mother in London, Ontario, two hours away from any work available in this fast paced industry. My amazing mom was always willing to help me follow my dreams by signing me up to all sorts of music, acting, and arts programs, camps, lessons, and conventions, driving me to auditions and set, and accompanying me to conventions, even though I know she often went without. I had a very tough childhood where I had to deal with death, abuse, bullying, mental and physical illness, poverty, racism and a generally unstable lifestyle at too young an age. I was extremely lucky that throughout this I was given the opportunity to access a variety of art programs because without the arts I can honestly say I would not be where I am today, and likely wouldn't even be alive.
Growing up I always used acting as a way to disappear into other lives that seemed so different and far from my own. I was able to maintain some semblance of sanity by living through my characters. I have always been very into method acting and throughout my lifetime I have been able to keep good habits I developed by getting into character and even break some of my own bad habits. I have also been able to learn and grow in a way I don't think is possible without going through the arts.
When I was 19 I took a break from the industry to get my post secondary education at Western University for Social Work. It was a trying time being away from what I loved so much, but I was trying to be responsible and have a plan B. If anything, it gave me a lot of different experiences that made me who I am today, taught me a lot, but most of all demonstrated to me that the film and television industry is where I truly belong and feel most at home.
In 2012 I started dipping my toes back into the industry by acting in local student films and projects being shot in London. By 2013 I decided to make the move to Toronto and re-emerge myself in the industry. I went against what a lot of important individuals in my life wanted for me, but it was the best decision I ever made. I worked on whatever projects I could get involved with in whatever position I could get hired in. Mainly that involved acting or the art department since I worked as an art instructor for 8 years, but I also worked as a production assistant, in locations, casting, ADing and transportation on non-union productions.
In 2015 I became a scenic paint permit with IATSE 873 and early on stumbled into Transportation and added it as my second category. I actually went and became a school bus driver in order to get my B license so that I could be considered for the category. Six years later and I am a member, and I absolutely LOVE working in the union world. I have worked on projects like Conviction, Designated Survivor, Star Trek, Titans, The Descendant and Jack Reacher as a scenic painter, and People of Earth, Umbrella Academy, Impulse, Ginny and Georgia, Dare Me, Titans, American Gods, Jupiter's Legacy, and Station 11 doing transportation and picture vehicles.
In 2016, I stumbled into becoming a producer and owning my own production companies and it has been a whirlwind of an experience. I really wanted to support my partner at the time who was a talented writer and director, so I went to work and ended up realizing producing was a skill buried within me. My feature Twilight Ride, is a project I hold very near to my heart, I am so proud of what we were all able to accomplish as a team on this film, and I cannot wait to see what becomes of it and what is next for our production company!
I have truly been blessed by all of these different experiences within the film and television community. When it comes down to it I cannot imagine my life or myself separated from this amazing world of art. The arts have saved me more times than I can count, when I have had nothing else, I have been able to turn to the arts, at times when it has felt like life itself has rejected me, the arts both accepted me and allowed me to continue to thrive. For me, it doesn't matter what I am doing within the industry, as long as I get to live with it as my main focus. I literally live for art and for the film and television industry and I am truly thankful for every day I have been given to work in it!
