Passionate Colombian filmmaker and music composer dedicated to social documentaries focusing on art and culture, Monica is the owner and founder of The Boom House Productions, a video and music production house based in Boston, MA. Monica moved to New York City in 2010 and since then has collaborated in a wide variety of video and film projects as a Director, a Producer, a DP and sometimes even as a sound mixer and a music composer. She co-produced MY NAME IS PEDRO, an award winning documentary film that premiered in Woodstock Film Festival (Honorable Mention for Best Documentary) and received the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary at The Chicago Latino Film Festival and Best Feature doc at the Brooklyn Film Festival.
She has also worked in film distribution for dGenerate Films, as an assistant producer for Cine Institute and Crowing Roosters, and as an editor for Stick Figures and Big Fish Entertainment. She moved to Boston in 2015 where she Directed and Produced a short documentary film, BOSTON'S LATIN QUARTER, a film that's been used widely by grassroots organizations and the Mayor's office to promote and share the value of cultural enclaves within a city.
Monica's first carrier had nothing to do with filmmaking. She became a Social Psychologist in Colombia and in 2005 started working with ex-combats from illegal armed groups under the umbrella of peace treaties with Paramilitary forces and guerrilla fighters that were able to flee their battalions in search of a better life for themselves and for their families. Monica struggled to understand the complexities of war and peace and began a search for more impactful ways to create social awareness and promote conversations among those privileged ones that ignored the suffering and injustice of many but probably had the key to unravel real and necessary change. It was then that Monica found Documentary film and completely fell in love with this art form that answered many of her questions about the possibility of building those bridges.
Monica continues to create powerful pieces rooted in storytelling sparking important conversations that put culture and art in the center of social transformation and human connection. Her first feature documentary film DREAMS OF CHONTA is an intimate portrait of an undocumented immigrant like it has never been seen before; Other films focus on the injustice and separation through the lens of terror, inequity and policy; this is a story about the hopes and dreams of an artist that struggles to create a bridge between 2 worlds. Monica keeps the focus on the characters gains and aspirations as opposed to despair. This story honors the wealth and the ripples of change that immigration creates.
