Just an immigrant, bisexual, brown girl trying to forge her path in the white man’s domain.
Mercedes Mason moved to the United States as an immigrant in the summer of 1996. She had never tasted peanut butter before, never attended a baseball game and never spoken English. She learned the language quickly, however, and realized the power of communication.
Her passion for storytelling started at a young age when she spent her time playing “actress and director” with her best friend. As she grew older she realized these were actual professions. Her course was set.
While earning in a BA in psychology, her childhood dreams of creating stories kept nagging at her. Eventually, she moved to LA to pursue acting. Luckily, she was able to find work and create a name for herself. Yet the craft of acting requires permission. Permission from studio heads and casting and approval from directors and agents. Mercedes realized she needed to create her own content. She had too many stories she could no longer silence, especially in an environment where women, certainly women of color, are a small minority of the masses when it comes to directing. Add in the fact that she’s also LGBTQ+ and the number reduces even further.
So with her immigrant hunger intact, she set out to, yet again, follow her dreams. This time, as a writer and director.
I hope you’ll give her the opportunity to tell her stories.
Thank you.
(Not sure why she wrote this in third person or is continuing to speak as such, but alas, it amused her and still does).
