Mattia Piccioli is an Italian director and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, with a strong interest in stories of migration, identity, and intercultural connections. He is the Founder and Vice President of the filmmaking association AnarKino APS.
Teranga, his first medium-length documentary, was born from a meeting with Samba and a desire to share his experience between Senegal and Italy. The film has garnered international recognition, earning official selections at the ARUCAD Cinematic Seeds Festival, the ICJ International Film Award, and the Duemila30 Festival in Milan. Through an immersive approach and his own narrative voice, Mattia constructs narratives that combine observation, personal reflection, and authenticity, capturing encounters, gestures, and atmospheres that connect different cultures.
His work explores how human connections can transform individual stories into universal narratives. This thematic focus is evident in his documentary No Prompt for Soul, which recently won 2nd Prize at the Last Gesture International Festival.
Mattia has also expanded his artistic scope through significant multimedia projects and partnerships. He has collaborated with the renowned theatrical group La Fura Dels Baus in conjunction with the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, and he realized the cinematic documentary photography exhibition Dietro il Paesaggio in Carrara.
His previous short films have received attention at international events: Shake Before Use was selected for the Pebbles Underground Film and Video Art Festival and AJR VISION Cinema Indipendente, while other works have received an honorable mention at the Onirica Film Festival and an official selection at the NanoCon International Film Festival (NIFF), consolidating his expertise in audiovisual storytelling.
