Matt Dionne is an award-winning writer/director based in Toronto, Canada.
His films primarily fall into the comedy and drama genres — his dramas tend to explore themes related to identity, social structures, and mental health through gritty realism, while his comedies often still deal with serious subject matter, but in a much more witty and sardonic way.
He’s received numerous accolades for his writing, including his short scripts, 10-11 In Progress, which won Best Drama Screenplay at the 2025 Asian Independent Film Festival, and the 2025 Caravan International Film Festival, and Best Short Drama Screenplay at the 2025 New York Screenwriting Awards; and UnMatched, which won Best Comedy Screenplay at the 2025 Niagara Canada International Film Festival.
His directorial debut, Athletic Withdrawal, won Best Short Film at the 2024 Reels International Film Festival, Best Director at the 2023 International Motion Picture Awards, Best Drama at the 2023 Iconic Images Film Festival, and Best Actress at the 2023 Carpe Diem Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Drama at the 2024 Niagara Canada International Film Festival, Best Short Narrative at the 2024 Orion International Film Festival, and Best Actress at the 2023 Chatham-Kent International Film Festival. His short comedy, UnMatched, won Best Canadian Film at the 2025 Kitchener Waterloo International Film Festival, Best Comedy at the Brampton Canada International Film Festival, and Best Actor at the 2025 Toronto Global Film Festival; and was nominated for Best Short Film at the 2025 Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival.
