Maryam is an Iranian documentary filmmaker based in Scotland. She holds an MA in Documentary Directing from the University of Edinburgh and an MA in Visual Communication from Iran. Her graduation film, Accused Number 41, won the Student Award at the One World Media Awards, was a finalist for the Academy Award, and long-listed for the BAFTA Student Awards.
Her self-funded short, Salto, screened at 19 international festivals and won three awards. Her work focuses on human stories, particularly women overcoming adversity, and she has also worked as an Assistant Director on several acclaimed documentaries.
In 2023, she was awarded a Small Grant to create a video art piece for Refugee Festival Scotland, and in 2024, she was commissioned as a talent filmmaker in the Bridging the Gap program at the Scottish Documentary Institute to direct a short film, Between Us, which had its world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
