I started writing stories when I started reading fairy tales, around the age of 6 or 7.
When it came time to pick a career during the last year of high school I thought about what I was good at and what I enjoyed doing. I wasn't confident I could support myself writing fiction so I enrolled in the journalism program at Suffolk University, a city school for the working classes, ironically located on Boston's toney Beacon Hill.
I met my wife there and we’ve been married nearly 40 years and have two boys, who are now young men. We became grandparents last year with the birth of Leo, who never stops exploring or moving.
After graduating I worked as a reporter and editor in print journalism for about 15 years. I then made the leap to the online world in 1995 when most people didn't know what the internet was.
I worked at several cutting-edge start-up companies before becoming news editor of Boston.com at the Boston Globe where I directed a staff of producers to cover some of the biggest news stories in New England and the nation.
At this time I was drawn to more visual forms of storytelling. I experimented with video on my own for a few years and was the first editor at the Boston Globe to give reporters video cameras, encouraging them to create video news stories.
In 2012, after leaving the Boston Globe, I enrolled in a graduate program at Northeastern University where I was able to further develop my video production skills.
While studying at Northeastern I found I could make money shooting and editing video and sold two weekly video concepts to my former employer: Drink of the Week, where a Boston bartender creates a cocktail on camera; and Dorm Room Chef, where a Boston chef creates a meal that college students can make in their dorm room.
Creating these two videos on a weekly basis for more than a year helped hone my skills for quick video set ups; camera shooting strategies; and video editing.
After earning a masters degree in digital media, I started Reel Partners Media where I create short-form, documentary-style, videos for news organizations, businesses and non-profits.
Most recently I created the short documentary, “Paloma, Angel of the Sea,” which is the first project I submitted to film festivals.
