Maria Grazia Carriero (b. Gioia del Colle, 1980), artist and lecturer in graphic and scenographic disciplines. She trained in Visual Arts and Performing Arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. The common thread in her research is virtuality, approached as a philosophical and anthropological concept through the investigation of popular culture, beliefs, and ascetic practices. She has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows at Galleria Blanchart and Galleria Maria Cilena in Milan (2009–2011), Fabbrica del Vapore (DOCVA) in Milan (2011), Fondazione Merz in Turin (2011), Pall Mall Gallery in London (2012), the Rathaus in Stuttgart, Cantieri Koreja in Lecce (2012), Fondazione Pino Pascali in Polignano a Mare (2013), Museo MARTA in Taranto (2016), and Museo dell’Opera di Santa Chiara in Naples (2022).
She was selected for Premio Zingarelli Rocca delle Macìe (2012), the Biennale Mediterranea 17 (2015), and Adrion Art promoted by the Agenzia per il Patrimonio Culturale Euromediterraneo in Lecce to represent Apulian artistic research (2013). She won the artist residency L'Arte contemporanea nei luoghi del quotidiano (2014) and of the Premio Progetto Air Land 3.0 INSIDE LAND, Ex Officine Ferroviarie in Barge; a photograph of her work entered the permanent collection of the Museo di Barge (CN) (2020). She was selected for Futuro Arcaico platform, for the first edition of the Mellone Art Prize, organized by the namesake foundation, for the Biennale della Fotografia Femminile di Mantova Off circuit with the project Liminal, and for the Exibart Prize 2022.
In 2024, she took part in the group shows Schiaparelli Pink curated by Sara De Carlo and Around Photography curated by Graziella Melania Geraci, won the In between call curated by Altamira, and exhibited at Borgo Pio Gallery and Monk in Rome. That same year, she presented the solo exhibition Malerbe. Poetica della dissidenza, curated by Giuliana Schiavone at the Microba in Bari, followed in 2025 by Versus Limen. Soglie, Thresholds, tensions, crossings, also curated by Giuliana Schiavone at Galleria 32 in Carovigno.
With the publishing house Progedit – in the Antropologia e Mediterraneo series directed by Professor Eugenio Imbriani – she published Arte e ricerca etnografica. Il laùru: i luoghi, gli incontri, le testimonianze (2018) together with Nicola Zito, Masquerade. L’universo dietro la Maschera. Percorsi tra Arte e Antropologia with a preface by Enzo Spera (2021), and Storia di Lina. Geografie affettive tra arte ed etnografia, with a preface by Eugenio Imbriani and a postface by Pietro Clemente (2025). Her work has been featured in the publications Bagattelle.
