Malin Dahl is a Swedish filmmaker based outside Örebro, working as a director, screenwriter, and producer. She has a background in visual arts and studied at Örebro Art School.
Since 2009, she has run the production company Backa Studios, where she develops and produces feature films, short films, documentaries, and animated works. Her films are often driven by character and atmosphere rather than plot, with a strong visual approach and a recurring interest in the body, emotional states, and inner conflict.
She moves freely between genres — from drama to horror, comedy to the surreal — and is drawn to stories marked by discomfort, tension, and things that don’t quite resolve. Grief, desire, guilt, identity, and transformation are recurring themes in her work.
Her first feature film, Lantisar (Homecoming), became a major audience success in Sweden and has been one of the most-watched films on Swedish Television (SVT) over several years.
Her short films, including CITYWALK, have screened at festivals in Sweden and internationally, including Uppsala Short Film Festival.
Her most recent feature film, The Silence of Snow (Tyst faller snön), premiered at Göteborg Film Festival.
Her feature film May You Live premiered at Göteborg Film Festival and was released in Swedish cinemas in 2025.
Through Backa Studios, she focuses on developing original projects with a strong personal voice, often working close to the material and the filmmaking process.
