Macabro: Mexico City International Horror Film Festival is the first and largest festival dedicated to genre cinema in Mexico, and a key reference in Latin America. Conceived as a space for the exhibition of contemporary and independent horror cinema, Macabro also promotes the appreciation of classic and cult films, supports Mexican and Latin American production, fosters historical reflection, and encourages emerging talent. Its programming model has become a benchmark for the dissemination of horror and fantasy cinema in the country. In 2026, Macabro will celebrate 25 years of existence, reaffirming its place as a cultural icon of Mexico City and the whole Country.

The festival was founded and directed ever since by Edna Campos, a cultural promoter, audiovisual producer and pioneer female genre film festival director in the world .

Macabro is an independent cultural organization supported and recognized by Mexico City Government, the Mexican Film Institute, the National Film Archive (Cineteca Nacional) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Macabro is one of the most respected and consolidated film festivals in Mexico and Latin America.

For ten-eleven days in August, the festival brings to Mexico City a celebration of horror films in a successful event that involves media, social and film industry through film exhibitions, Q&A sessions with guests, master classes, music, retrospectives, homages, parties with filmmakers and audience, music and trips to cool and touristic venues in the City. Macabro reaches about 30,000 people in live venues and more than a million on social network. Macabro also has extensions of it's programming in other cities of Mexico (Puebla, Tijuana, Oaxaca, Guacajuato, etc) after the main event.

Macabro has different special projects like Macabro Lab (formation and academy), Macabro Coven (women in horror), Macabro Factory (genre industry) to support genre filmmakers to develop films. We are part of FANTASTIKA, the Iberoamerican Fantastic and Horror Films Coproduction Forum, a project organized by four different producer entities in Countries like Spain (Catalunya), Argentina, Brasil, Uruguay and Mexico

Women in horror: Tinni Tüllman, Monica Demes, Sofía Carrillo, Sharon Toribio, Laurette Flores, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Sandra Becerril, Natasha Halevy and producers Rosalie Chilelli, Sandra Arriagada and Abigail Bonilla. Mexican filmmakers such as Jorge Michel Grau, Emilio Portes, Andrés Kaiser, Abraham Sánchez, Lex Ortega and South American wave: Jorge Olguín, Cristian Tapia Marchiroi, Santiago Fernández, Fabián Forte, Lucio Rojas, Felipe Guerra, Gonzalo Calzada, Hermanos Quintana y Javier Diment.

Macabro has also made homages to Juan López Moctezuma, Herschell Gordon Lewis, José Mojica Marins, Jan Svankmajer, Shinya Tsukamoto and Jorge Molina, among other masters of genre..

Rules & Terms

We invite you to participate in the 25th celebration of Macabro: Mexico City International Horror Film Festival, which will take place from August 13 to 23, 2026.
The twenty-fifth edition of the festival will be held 100% in person, with complementary online activities.
We kindly ask you to read this call for entries carefully and fully before submitting your work. We will be happy to answer your questions and provide additional information NOT INCLUDED here at the following emails: programacionmacabro@gmail.com and/or contacto.macabrofich@gmail.com
1 – GENERAL TERMS OF PARTICIPATION
1.1 There is no age or nationality restriction to participate.
1.2 Each participant may submit as many works as they wish.
1.3 Works will first be considered for inclusion in the COMPETITIVE sections: International Horror Feature, Ibero-American Horror Feature, Dark Fantasy & Sci-Fi Feature, Mexican Horror Short Film, International Horror Short Film, and Animated Horror Short Film. Films NOT selected for competition may be considered for PARALLEL EXHIBITION sections.
1.4 Macabro FICH does not pay screening fees for films in competition.
1.5 There are no restrictions regarding the original production format of the work.
1.6 To participate in competition, films must have been produced no earlier than 2025.
1.7 Macabro will not consider films resubmitted after not being selected in previous years.
1.8 Feature films previously screened in Mexico City before the 2026 edition of Macabro may NOT participate in the competitive selection, and will only be considered for non-competitive showcase sections.
1.9 The festival will agree with filmmakers on the streaming exhibition terms; this exhibition will be available exclusively in Mexico through a specialized platform.
2 – SUBMISSION
2.1 The submission period begins upon the publication of this call.
2.2 Submission forms and screeners will be accepted only through: https://filmfreeway.com/macabro
2.3 Authors are responsible for the rights to their works.
2.4 If selected for the Official Mexican Short Film Selection, the filmmaker must send a letter assuming full responsibility for any copyright dispute, releasing the festival from liability.
2.5 The submission deadline is March 31, 2026.
3 – SELECTION
3.1 Works will be selected for competition or exhibition. The final decision is not subject to appeal.
3.2 The festival will determine the screening dates and order.
3.3 Screenings will be held in DCP format in main venues, and in Blu-ray or digital format in alternate venues and/or streaming.
3.4 Films in languages other than Spanish must be submitted with English or Spanish subtitles. FILMS SELECTED MUST INCLUDE SPANISH SUBTITLES OR A DIALOGUE LIST FOR TRANSLATION.
3.5 Screening copies must be delivered according to the formats and deadlines established by the festival.
3.6 Award-winning works may be exhibited by the festival as part of commitments with its partners.
3.7 By accepting selection, works may be considered for activities beyond the official festival dates.
3.8 MACABRO FICH may invite feature films to the competition. Screener requests do not constitute an official invitation.
3.9 Feature films must have a runtime between 60 and 120 minutes, including credits.
3.10 Short films must have a runtime between 1 and 29 minutes, including credits.
3.11 The festival reserves the right to program medium-length films (30–59 minutes).
3.12 The organization may make last-minute changes or cancellations.
3.13 By accepting selection, works may be considered for post-festival activities.
4 – DELIVERY OF SELECTED FILMS
4.1 Selected works must be delivered within the deadlines agreed upon with the festival.
4.2 If the selected film is a work-in-progress, THIS MUST BE STATED UPON SUBMISSION, and a delivery date must be agreed with the festival; otherwise, it may be removed from the program without prior notice. The festival reserves the right to include the film in its lineup.
4.3 Macabro FICH will contact each filmmaker of the SELECTED WORKS directly to inform them of the participation requirements.
4.4 Upon selection, the festival will provide a PDF guide with the technical specifications required for exhibition files.
4.5 If your work is not selected and you request a written evaluation, it will have a cost of $100 USD.
5 – JURY
5.1 The Official Jury will consist of renowned national and international filmmakers and specialists. Macabro FICH will announce the Jury members prior to the festival.
5.2 The Jury’s decisions are final and may declare any category void.
6 – ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS
6.1 The festival will resolve any questions arising from this call; its decisions are final.
6.2 The festival may exhibit fragments of selected films for promotional purposes (website, social media, television, etc.).
6.3 Submission implies full acceptance of these terms.
7 – AWARDS

7.7 Macabro Fantasma for the Audience’s Favorite Film – White FICH Statuette.
All films produced between 2024 and 2026, regardless of nationality or section, are eligible for the Audience Award.
7.8 Daimon – Macabro Distribution Award for theatrical release in Mexico (feature categories only).
7.9 Daimon – México Macabro Mention, consisting of distribution consulting for feature films produced between 2024 and 2026.
7.10 Special Mentions in various categories awarded by the Jury.

1- BASES DE PARTICIPACIÓN
1.1 No hay límite de edad o nacionalidad para participar.
1.2 Cada participante podrá inscribir tantas obras como desee.
1.3 Las obras serán consideradas en primera instancia para ser incluidas en las secciones de COMPETENCIA: Largometraje Internacional de Horror, largometraje iberoamericano de Horror, largometraje dark fantasy & scifi, cortometraje mexicano de horror, cortometraje internacional de horror y cortometraje animado de horror. Los filmes NO seleccionados en competencia podrían ser considerados para las secciones de EXHIBICIÓN PARALELA.
1.4 Macabro FICH no paga derechos de exhibición para películas en competencia.
1.5 No hay restricción del formato original de realización de la obra.
1.6 La fecha de producción para participar en la competencia no podrá ser anterior al año 2024.
1.7 Macabro no tomará en cuenta para revisión los filmes que sean nuevamente inscritos y no hayan sido seleccionados en años anteriores.
1.8 Los largometrajes que hayan sido proyectados previamente en la Ciudad de México a la edición 2026 de Macabro, NO podrán participar en la selección competitiva, sólo serán considerados para secciones de muestra dentro del festival.
1.9 La organización acordará con los realizadores los términos de exhibición en streaming, el cual estará disponible únicamente en México a través de una plataforma especializada.
2.- INSCRIPCIÓN.
2.1 El período de inscripciones inicia a partir de la publicación de esta convocatoria.
2.2. El envío de fichas de inscripción y screeners solo se recibirá a través del sitio https://filmfreeway.com/macabro
2.3 Los autores son responsables de los derechos de sus obras.
2.4 De quedar en la Selección Oficial de Cortometraje Mexicano, se deberá enviar una una carta asumiendo responsabilidad sobre cualquier controversia sobre derechos de autor y liberando al festival de la misma.
2.5 La fecha límite de inscripción es: 31 de marzo de 2026.
3.- SELECCIÓN.
3.1 Las obras serán seleccionadas para competencia o exhibición. La decisión final será inapelable.
3.2 La organización definirá la fecha y orden de exhibición de las películas.
3.3 La proyección de las obras seleccionadas se realizará en DCP en sedes principales y Blu-Ray y digital en sedes alternas y/o streaming.
3.4 Las obras habladas en lenguas distintas al español se presentarán en versión subtitulada en inglés o en español. EN LA INSCRIPCIÓN DEBERÁN INCLUIRSE SUBTÍTULOS EN ESPAÑOL O LISTA DE DIÁLOGOS PARA TRADUCCIÓN.
3.5 Las copias de exhibición deberán ser enviadas en tiempos y formatos definidos por la organización.
3.6 Las obras ganadoras de algún premio podrán ser proyectadas por la organización en los compromisos que ésta tiene con sus aliados.
3.7 Al aceptar formar parte de la selección, la o las obras podrán ser consideradas para actividades posteriores a las fechas señaladas del festival.
3.8 MACABRO FICH podrá invitar largometrajes para la sección de competencia. La solicitud de screeners para visionado no será considerada como una invitación.
3.9 La duración para considerar la selección de un largometraje será de 60 a 120 minutos con créditos incluidos.
3.10 La duración para considerar la selección de un cortometraje será de 1 a 29 minutos con créditos incluidos.
3.11 La organización se reservará el derecho de programar mediometrajes (de 30 a 59 minutos).
3.12 La organización podría hacer cambios o cancelaciones de último momento.
3.13 Al aceptar formar parte de la selección, la o las obras podrán ser consideradas para actividades posteriores a las fechas señaladas del festival.
4.- ENVÍO DE LOS FILMES SELECCIONADOS
4.1 Las obras seleccionadas deberán ser enviadas en tiempos acordados con la organización del Festival.
4.2 En caso de que la película seleccionada se trate de un “work in progress”, DEBERÁ SER NOTIFICADO A LA ORGANIZACIÓN AL MOMENTO DE LA INSCRIPCIÓN y deberá acordar con la organización en una fecha de entrega, de lo contrario podría quedar fuera de la programación sin previo aviso. La organización se reserva el derecho de incluir la película en su programación.
4.3 Macabro FICH contactará directamente a todos y cada uno de los autores de las OBRAS SELECCIONADAS para notificarles sus condiciones de participación.
4.4 Al ser seleccionado, la organización entregará una guía en PDF con todas las especificaciones técnicas que deberán cumplir los archivos para su proyección.
4.5 En caso de que tu obra no quede seleccionada y solicites el dictamen sobre la misma, éste tendrá un costo de $100 USD.
5.- JURADO
5.1 El Jurado Oficial estará compuesto por reconocidos cineastas y especialistas nacionales e internacionales y será el encargado de otorgar los premios. Macabro FICH dará a conocer a los integrantes del Jurado, previo a la realización del Festival.
5.2 La decisión del Jurado será inapelable y podría declarar desierto alguno de los premios.
6.- ACEPTACIÓN DE LAS BASES
6.1 La Organización resolverá las dudas que pudieran plantearse, siendo su decisión final inapelable.
6.2 La Organización podrá exhibir fragmentos de los largometrajes seleccionados con fines promocionales (website, redes sociales, televisión, etc.)
6.3 La inscripción implica la aceptación de estas bases.
