Shortly after hearing this story, it is revealed that they are actually toys inside a gacha machine, and the “Gods” are just normal humans. One boy in particular, Tsukino, excitedly pays for a toy at the machine Sho lives in. Back inside the machine, the two toy dogs make their way up to the sacrificial temple. As they reach the top, Sho begins to have second thoughts about the sacrifice and makes a run for it. Sensei, fearful for the state of the village, rushes after him. As Tsukino waits for his toy to come out, he becomes more and more impatient. He starts knocking and shaking the machine, causing the toy world inside to crumble. Moments before Sho is crushed by falling pillars, Sensei pushes him out of the way. Seeing how Sensei risked his life to save Sho makes him see the true meaning of being a hero. Sho decides to fulfill his duty as “Hero of the village” and sacrifices himself. Once he is outside the machine, he realizes that there was nothing to be afraid of. Tsukino happily puts Sho, his favorite character, on his backpack and the two of them leave the store smiling.

The Girl Who Wore Freedom 1:29:22 Illuminate

Directed by Christian Taylor

THE GIRL WHO WORE FREEDOM brings us to Normandy, France. Once an idyllic landscape, Normandy had succumbed to German invaders who overran its farms, its manors, its countryside.

Here we meet Dany Patrix, Maurice Lecoueur, Henri-Jean Renaud, and others, who recount their unique relationships with the Allied forces who liberated Normandy on June 6, 1944. The journey from occupation to liberation, to acceptance and forgiveness to gratitude and pride, is explored through interviews with French survivors and American veterans in this powerful, personal film that tells stories handed down over two generations.

We visit Brecourt Manor, the site of the battle between the men of Easy Company - known as the Band of Brothers - and a German battery. We hear from the children of D-Day, who were cared for by American soldiers after their families were killed in the onslaught. We explore the nature of war, of forgiveness, of gratitude through interviews with French survivors and American veterans.

We travel today’s United States with Flo Plana, who seeks out the men of the 101st Airborne Division to collect and curate their stories for the Utah Beach D-Day Museum. We meet veterans like Ceo Bauer, Brad Freeman, and Bob DeVinney, who recount their experiences and the relationships they built over the summer of 1944.

Normandy itself is now a living war museum, with shrapnel on the beaches, bullet holes in its walls, and blood staining its church pews. Those that were there have vowed never to forget the lessons of World War II and to pass down the value of freedom to their children and their children’s children.

The film closes on contemporary D-Day celebrations of remembrance and gratitude, where French citizens of all ages celebrate those who were and are willing to defend freedom because they, the people of Normandy, know all too well that freedom is not free.

SHADOW 0:09:04

Directed by Francesca Jandasek

While I have created some film projections for live performances, this is the first short film that I have created. It all started while researching the Romanian Legend of the Argeș Monastery for a full evening length show I created in 2018. In this legend, a pregnant woman is immured to make the walls of the monastery stand. After further research, I came across the belief of the “stahie,” or shadow, an ancient Eastern European belief and practice that in order for the walls of a building to stand, someone has to be built into the walls either physically (i.e their body), or metaphysically (i.e their shadow).

As I delved into the legend and this belief, I found myself questioning Who is the shadow? Is the shadow real? What if shadows were real? What is reality? Does it even matter, if we all fade away from memory and existence, leaving nothing behind?

Ultimately, I was questioning whether, as a woman, it was more important for me to create, or to reproduce. And, why do I have this need? Is it to achieve a sort of immortality, a way to exist beyond my existence, whether through the creation of offspring, or art creation? The shadows represent the struggle of a woman artist - art creation vs. procreation. It is a question with no satisfactory answer.

Besides the central theme being a female dilemma, this film is female created (directed, composed, performed, and edited by women).

Titus & Mirabella 0:21:31

Directed by Melania Crisan

A romantic comedy about the first date between two quirky people who have never had a romantic relationship before but who desperately want one. A movie about fear and love.

Veteran Children: When Parents Go To War 0:28:55

Directed by Susan Hackley

Veteran Children: When Parents Go To War is a half-hour documentary film that focuses on the impact of war on America’s military families, especially children. Our nation has been at war for nearly 18 years, yet few people know that more than two million military children have a mom or dad, or both, who has deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria. While many films broadly describe the costs of war, this film uniquely highlights the voices of children who speak candidly about their own experiences. They tell us about their loneliness, fears, struggles, and sacrifices as well as how they cope and demonstrate remarkable strengths.

Going My Way 0:15:20
