La Città dell'Utopia International Film Festival was established to spotlight independent and emerging filmmakers who seek to express themselves as true auteurs, offering profound and unconventional artistic and critical perspectives. The Festival serves as a meeting place for filmmakers and film enthusiasts to connect, exchange ideas, and collaborate.
La Città dell'Utopia International Film Festival is more than just a showcase of films; it is a call to action. Inspired by the utopian ideal, we believe in cinema's power to challenge, provoke, and transform. We aim to create a space where art becomes a central medium for dialogue, reflection, and change, fostering local and global connections.
The Festival celebrates the diversity of voices from independent or low-budget filmmakers worldwide, particularly those who dare to experiment and challenge mainstream norms. We embrace bold, distinctive approaches that reveal fresh, often overlooked perspectives in storytelling and visual artistry.
We accept films in four categories: short fiction, documentary, experimental, and animation. Staying true to our mission of accessibility and inclusivity, we do not charge a submission fee.
The Festival features a comprehensive program, including training sessions, round tables, workshops, film screenings, and discussions. All finalists who are selected and able to attend must commit to actively participating in the entire one-week program.
The Festival is organized by La città dell’Utopia, promoted by Servizio Civile Internazionale and co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ program and supported by the National Youth Agency.
The event will be held in the open-air venue of La Città dell’Utopia, a social laboratory in the San Paolo neighbourhood of southern Rome. This unique space serves as an experimental hub for active citizenship, encouraging dynamic exchanges between local and international communities.

Our festival is not about awards and credits but fostering dialogue and a critical atmosphere. A group of young and talented filmmakers will select films for screening, but we won't have any winners! Instead, we provide conversation events to speak with filmmakers and listen to them. Let's come back to the main idea behind cinema: Interaction! We welcome all international filmmakers to come and will host you during the festival in Città dell'Utopia host place. Create a chance for filmmakers and the audience to stay together and hopefully open a door for future collaborations.
