Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Kyla fell in love with the arts very quickly. Starting off as a poet and songwriter, Kyla discovered that telling stories allowed her to step out of her complicated childhood and into a world of bliss and happiness. After a while, songwriting progressed to singing and then eventually to dancing.
When she was 11 years old, she was chosen to act in a kit at her school for a Christmas performance and immediately fell in love with the craft of acting. She went on to study at the John Robert Powers School and she also performed in theater and musical theater at Gallery 37 Center For The Arts. At the time, she thought that musical theater wasn't for her but "straight" theater, film, and TV was, so she went to the University of Southern California where she majored in theater with an acting focus.
While at USC she performed in many shows included For Colored Girls, Disappearing Act, and The Lloyd Project. She also participated in short films and webseries, both on and off campus, like the Supernatural Enthusiasts Club, Rapport, The Bunnyman, and many more. In The Fall of 2013, she studied abroad at the British American Drama Academy where she performed in a play called Love's Cure. It was the first time the play had been performed by women so she, along with her castmates, were placed in the Shakespeare archives. She was also a member of Theater Unleashed in the Los Angeles area where she participated in two shows, has lent her voice to short films, and was part of the hit webseries, Treading Yesterday ,that has participate in numerous festivals.
After moving to New York last year, she immediately found success as an actress and participated in four projects. Hyena (The Refugee Plays) was part of the New York Frigid Festival where she was able to portray the deceased young mother of a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo. She also got to participate in the one act vampire-comedy, Hemophobia, with 68 Cent Crew, her former theater company. She was also part of a live-filmed/hybrid project called Walk-Up and a comedy-drama fantasy play about spinning in NYC called Resistance.
Throughout all of this, she kept writing. She was a Chicago Young Playwrights Finalist in 2011, her solo piece made it into The Lloyd Project at USC, and she just completed a webseries she wrote called Finding Our Way with her production company, Melanin & Magic Productions. She also has an action-musical short film that she is submitting to competitions and will soon be done with edits on her pilot. She can currently be found in post-production for her webseries with her company, eating, kickboxing or traveling. She is also an educator and loves working with children. She is determined to leave her mark on the world and laugh while eating chocolate along the way!
She is currently freelancing with Ramona's Models and Talent for on-camera commercials and commercial print and is looking to expand her team.
